And Beckham steps up to take the penalty, and the keeper saves it!!! What next?

beckham is distraught. Four years of hurt compounded etc etc…

How do you think the press would have dealt with it? I think they would have portrayed it positively as his public persona and perception are so different.

But what about rival fans? “you’ve let your country down” etc.

I think he would have signed a mega cash deal witha euro club, as he surely couldn’t have fancied going through that again.

Incidentally…Do you think that posh spice really does take it there? She denies it, but she would wouldn’t she?

cough (gar)Baggio! cough

Wouldn’t make such a difference as if it cost them the cup or later on in the tourney…

his performance in that match would have rightfully been critizised. He was terrible. If it wasnt for Butt, your midfield would have ceased to perform. Sven would be mauled in the press for having played an unfit player. 45 minutes of Beckham is not as good as 90 minutes of a fit player.

It was exactly like the Greece match again.

The penalty (which was a dive, BTW, and if the Argentinians had have done it, it would be the usual media frenzy of Cheating Argie Bastards) was really badly taken.

OST, remarkably I think you have hit on why Beckham is noticed. his wife. It wasnt until they were associated together that his performances were analyzed by the casual football fan, let alone lionized. I dont even think he is that good a player.

As for his Free kicks, nothing annoys me more than when a player is about to take a free kick he’s “Attempting a Beckham special”.

Cock. how many goals has he scored from free kicks for England?
How many has he taken and made a mess of?
Including yesterdays goal, how many free kicks has Roberto Carlos scored for Brazil?

The answer? 2. But because of the first one being incredible free kick 5 years ago against France in Le Tournoi. Yet everyone thinks he’s the best in the world, and expect him to score every time. In reality he’s very ordinary.

Beckham is the same. He aint that great at free kicks. He wastes them by shooting, trying to show off, when the ball played into the danger area as a cross is more effective.

The whole “Bend it like Beckham” attitude that has sprung up around him annoys me so much

Incidentally, do you think that owlstretchingtime wears ladies’ underwear? I’m sure he’d deny it, but then he would wouldn’t he?

I thought there were some interesting aspects to the penalty:

  • Owen offered to take it. Owen: “You or me ?”, Beckham: “Me”
  • Beckham was not in ‘the zone’ for it. Whether all the sports psychology has focused/trained him on free-kicks I don’t know but he just wasn’t there as he was, for example, the 92nd minute free kick against Greece. That worries me (a) because he should have been and (b) because if he knew that, he shouldn’t have taken the kick
  • It wasn’t at all a good penalty, IMHO. Echo’s of Psycho’s blast it and hope attitude. Had it been, what 6-9 inches to the right, the ball would have hit the 'keepers planted foot.

Where would we have been had he missed ? 0 – 0 at half time having largely dominated the first period… Beyond that, who knows…a draw would have meant we needed to beat Nigeria – the Group could have even ended up with three teams on five points.

Can’t think about posh in any kind of sexual way whatsoever – that he manages to get it in the back of that particular net leaves me in considerably greater awe than does his performances on free kicks. Having said that, I wouldn’t have a view even if I did…or summin’…
