Are you saying that all the Franken accusers fit this pattern or just that the first one was a Republican setup which happened to hit the jackpot when a bunch of other women came forward?
I’m skeptical of that. Schneiderman was certainly not acting anything like someone who was frightened of dirt that Trump may have had on him.
He did, but agreed to settle the case out of court just a few weeks after the election. The other matters have usually been in conjunction with other attorneys general, at least that I’m aware of.
I’m not saying that Schneiderman definitely wasn’t looking into allegations against Trump as vigorously as he could - but considering the timing of some of Trump’s remarks it appears likely that Trump has had blackmail material on Schneiderman for five years or so now. Shame on Schneiderman for being blackmail-able, of course, but this needs looking into as well.
A formidable woman, Solicitor General Barbara Underwood, took over as acting AG pending a permanent appointment. I think she’d be outstanding as a permanent choice as well. However, the article points out:
He settled on terms that were thought to be unfavorable to Trump. The coverage at the time indicated that Trump decided to settle rather than have it hanging over him as he assumed the presidency.
People don’t usually sue other people and force them into paying $25M as part of the settlement, accompanied by some pretty harsh language, if they’re afraid that the other side has blackmail material on them.
It’s possible that Schneiderman didn’t know that Trump had this info. And as for Trump himself, my guess is that Trump probably forgot the info he had once received about Schneiderman. Trump has been involved with a lot over the years, and has interacted with an enormous number of people, and it’s probably too much for him to keep track of it all. Even in the event that he remembered the incident altogether, it’s likely that he would have forgotten the details and who provided the info etc., which would have made using it extremely difficult. Which is in addition to the fact that trying to blackmail an AG is pretty difficult to pull off, for someone like Trump who would be risking his own neck in the process.
I find it interesting that Schneiderman goes down and then like a day later Avenetti has a bunch of new dirt on Trump and nobody knows where it came from.
Sure is hard to think of any Democrat credibly accused of abusive behavior toward women whom Democrats didn’t promptly and fairly judge according to consistent moral principles. Nor did they ever attempt to smear the women who were victims.
I can think of several before the #MeToo era, but since then the Democrats have actually been both consistent and on the right side morally speaking. And the Republicans have continued to be largely on the side of the status quo, which is essentially the side of abusers and misogynists.
Actually, yes. This is great progress, and I’m very hopeful it will continue. Doing the right thing has to start sometime, and when it does, it should be praised.
