.... And Gmail was a good choice, why ?

I’ve had similar issues with Gmail. I don’t like it much.

Wow, I love GMail - I think it’s a very solid little service, and I use it in preference to all my other email accounts.

I thought the file size limit was 5 Megabytes, and I’m fairly certain it’s at least 2MB; is it possible your connection’s a little slow and that it’s timing out when the photo is being uploaded into GMail?

In the help section, it says that the maximum size is 20 MB, but I have had trouble sending attachments of smaller than that before, which I always blamed on the clunky connection I had at the time. I haven’t had to send anything very large since, so I don’t know if it really was my connection or a Gmail problem.

Whatever you do, don’t forget your password! When it comes to resetting your password, GMail’s support site is a far, far cry from being supportive.

I was a diehard Eudora user for years. The only thing I really don’t like about Gmail is they don’t really have folders; I like to sort my e-mail into folders.

Otherwise the speed, convenience, and search capabilities of Gmail are really great.

Yeah. The Folders thing. Now that I have something akin to an Address book working, and I’ve installed Gmail as an account on my Mac Mail software, I’m kinda dedicated to making it work. As long as I am using my Mac to check Gmail, I have folders I can build in Mac Mail easily enough.

Folders? Not a crisis issue. Search? A major crisis issue, though Gmail search seems as fine as Mac Mail Search. Doesn’t matter to me if I leave a stream of 4,000 emails in place chronologically or if I get all anal and parse them into folders. As long as I can Search easily and find all emails that have the phrase "Cecil Adams Is God " in them, I’m good to go.

File size on attachments: Still futzing. Will try sending again, from new cable modem link put in this a.m.

ETA: Excellent point, Monty. My password is straightdope, so I’m unlikely to forget it !!
