Sometimes leadership requires *educating *the underinformed, not pandering to them - being as good as the best, not as bad as the worst.
Ever think about that?
I agree completely, but now you’re asking for more than 99% of politicians can handle. You can’t educate people about stuff you just learned from your staff or from a meeting with some activists a few weeks ago.
Climate change *is * a national security issue.
So Kasich really isn’t all that interested in the subject. Thanks for the confirmation that he’s so badly underprepared for the Presidency.
That’s an argument that some have tried to make, aided by the Pentagon, who have in fact declared climate change to be a national security issue. The reason the argument hasn’t taken hold with the voters is because a) it’s a long range problem at a time when we have immediate problems, and b) there are no solutions in the short term anyway. You know what we could be doing now? reforming entitlements and putting the budget on a permanently sustainable path. We could also be reforming our government and the way we do politics so we can have honesty and competency in our government.
If all that works out, climate change probably takes care of itself. Tech will probably bail us out.
Kasich is the most prepared for the Presidency of any of the candidates running. But unlike Democrats, who apparently think that their favored candidates are all Cecil-like, us conservatives know the limitations of politicians. Kasich is very skilled at management, compromise, and interpersonal relations, and in his long service in government he has learned a lot about some subjects, namely budget issues and administration of federal and state programs. But no, I do not suspect he knows all that much about climate change. I don’t think anyone in DC knows all that much about it. Half the Democratic Party knows it’s a serious problem, and half the Democratic Party and all of the GOP think it’s too expensive to fix(those Democrats being coal state, agriculture state, and manufacturing state Democrats). Given the available options on climate change, they don’t really need to know much more than that at this point.
You left out “among the Republicans”.
What other fundamental issues besides climate change is he ignorant or indifferent about?
The only thing Kasich knows well is how to successfully run a government. You know who doesn’t know how to do that? Anybody else left in either field. The three legislators have far fewer accomplishments than Kasich did and none have run a state. The one that ran a federal department did not earn very good reviews for her management skills.
That being said, he’s not an ignoramus about any major national subject. I’d bet he can discuss any national issue toe to toe with Hillary Clinton and acquit himself just fine.
Which requires a basic interest in the fundamental issues of the job. Which you have acknowledged he lacks.
Not from the news sources you limit yourself to, no. So?
You’ve already conceded climate change. What else?
He’d certainly convince you. ![]()
The issue, for those who don’t know what the poster is referring to, is that Kasich just barely beat the required signatures to be on the Pennsylvania ballot. Rubio’s campaign challenged the validity of enough signatures to knock Kasich off the ballot, but filed 13 minutes late. It’s in court, of course.
But it doesn’t matter: he can’t get enough delegates to win, mathmatically, even if he wins 100% of the remaining votes. He can only win via convention games, and as the only sane man in the lineup I think ge has a real shot at being the candidate, and losing in the fall because digusted R voters stay home.
Which is exactly why they should avoid campaigning on it. The more they talk about national security, the greater the chance they may inadvertently remind voters about reality. For example, notice how well Jeb!'s “My brother kept us safe” line went over – and that was with his fellow Republicans.
Rubio just can’t do anything right, can he?
Now that he’s no longer running I think his campaign probably doesn’t even have standing to sue. Shame they couldn’t have gotten, say, the Cruz campaign, to file in parallel.
But since the campaign is suspended and can be resumed, would it still exist as far as standing is concerned?
In 2008, when Kasich was a private citizen, he was pulled over by an Ohio state trooper for driving past a situation where a trooper had a his lights flashing on the side of the road. Apparently in Ohio it’s illegal to pass a cop car with its lights flashing. In a subsequent speech, Kasich called the cop and idiot and lied that he did not, in fact pass the cop. He also called the cop an idiot during the traffic stop.
It’s not. You’re supposed to pull to the second lane if there is one and it’s possible to do so safely, and if not, you’re supposed to slow down and proceed with caution. He didn’t do either, apparently.
That’s worth a ticket, and I can’t believe he called the officer an idiot. That’s Trump-like.
Kasich made the speech in 2011 to the Ohio EPA when he was Governor. Not exactly a high profile event. I speculate that the point he was making was that regulators should be respectful of the regulated. Not sure. At any rate it was poorly played. I admit though that I wouldn’t make too much of it.

Old news here in Ohio: Kasich is erratic, impulsive, easily irritated and sometimes speaks without thinking.
