I did clip their wings so that they don’t fly around smashing into walls and windows while they learn the lay of the land. Even with their wings trimmed, if I’m sitting at the computer, Octa can (just barely) fly from my shoulder back to the cages which is about 12 feet away. Aqua mostly just lands on the floor 10 or so feet away.
They love being on the floor, they both get super excited and bob their heads and run around like crazy.
Aqua also decided last night that she no longer wants to snuggle up with mom and Octa in the nest box and slept by herself on a perch.
Yes, he’s still feeding Blue. As annoying as it was when we needed his help feeding the babies, I’m kind of glad that Blue has him. Until just a short time ago, Blue had a wife - Purple. While unbeknownst to me Green was laying fertile eggs, Purple was dying of a tumor. You can see in the picture how distended her chest was. So I was busy with vet appointments and seeing her through her last days and that’s how I missed the eggs.
Blue was beside himself once Purple was gone and Turquoise has been a huge comfort to him. Here’s Purple:
It snowed last night. Here are the babies (being extra cute) looking at it out the window:
Oh! That reminds me. My grandfather had given us one of his hand reared parakeets, super tame, who also loved to run around on the floor. Unfortunately one day my baby sister stepped onto his tail, which startled him into flying off…without his tail feathers.
Luckily they grow back, but of course he got renamed to ‘Stubby’ for the rest of his life.
OK I will! It’s really funny to watch them running all over
Yeah sometimes they’re just ridiculously cute and other times it’s “holy hell, where did these demons come from  ??”
Now that I know the differences between them it’s super obvious who is who. Baby budgies have black beaks that turn adult colour eventually. The black on Aqua’s beak is mustache shape and Octa’s is goatee shape. Now I can look back at pictures when I couldn’t tell them apart and know who is who. Also Aqua is very green but Octa has a bit of his dad’s turquoise on his belly. They also act so differently that I can tell them apart from a distance depending on how they are playing or what they’re doing.
Here they are running around on the floor. Unfortunately, it’s super short because my phone decided to run out of storage 5 seconds after I hit record. It’s a shame, too, because they were wild but I thought I’d post this as it’s better than nothing.
Guys - THEY FETCH!! I’m going to try to get a video of it. I discovered today that, if I roll up a tiny piece of paper towel and throw it, they run and grab it! Then chase each other trying to get it away from the other one. My floor is now littered with little rolled up bits of paper towel.
I have to save a whole bunch of pictures and videos from my phone to my laptop so that I have room for the video first.
You can get x amount of space for free, then if you turn on “Camera Uploads” you get even more space as the files are uploaded (up to 3gig, I think).
It may only work with newly-taken photos versus the ones that are on your phone. But set it up now and you’ll be better able to nuke stuff from the phone in the future.
If you don’t do this, we might have to WAIT for the SQUEEEABLE VIDEO we’re all anticipating, and that would be a tragedy!!!
Here’s the video, finally! And because animals like to make a liar out of you, they’re all subdued and not running around as much :smack:. But they’re still pretty cute.
