Live webcam here. The eggs are supposed to hatch today or tomorrow. I’ve been checking in every hour or two all day. Mama Eagle (I assume it’s Mama) has been restless recently. She was moving around and I could see three eggs about 30 minutes ago. Scroll down the page for lots of info.
About 50 miles from my house.
Being near the Mississippi, I’ve seen about as many Bald Eagles as Robins lately
Brian
When I lived in Indiana, I used to take a weekend trip to Keokuk, IA every January to see the eagles. They congregate near the open water below the dam(s) on the Mississippi- as I’m sure you know, N9IWP.
It was not unusual to see 200 eagles in a day, and 20 or so in one tree.
Thank you.
They just had a nice close up of the eggs. The middle one looks like it has a small crack?
I’m playing my CD’s as I browse here. Detroit City by Bobby Bare is playing. Just as the video on that eagle cam zoomed in providing a nice closeup of the side of the eagle’s head w/eye and beak, my music was playing the deadpan speaking part of the lyrics:
“‘Cause you know, I took a freight train north to Detroit city,
And after all these years I find I’ve been wastin’ my time…”
Hearing a bald eagle say this in voiceover is an experience not to be missed.
Thanks, nice find. I’m a little hesitant to get too engrossed, though, because last time I watched something like this, the eggs were stolen by a predator bird.
But I’ll tune in again; hopefully this story will turn out better. By the way, where are you getting the information that the eggs are supposed to hatch soon? I’m not finding that part.
On the raptorresource webcam page , they say the first egg was laid on Feb. 23 and is due to hatch on April 1. I actually got the link from my niece and she said they were due today or tomorrow. If you scroll down to the Q&A below the webcam, they give last year’s dates for when the eggs were laid and when they hatched. Very close to this year’s dates, so all three should be hatching within the next week.
There appears to be light shining on the nest. Could that be right? Wouldn’t it bother the parent?
Where is the other parent? They don’t hunt at night, do they?
The current image is what appears to be a fully grown, dead eagle.
I think it’s an infrared light, which the bird can’t see. I haven’t seen the other parent make an appearance yet, but I just started watching earlier today.
Kyla, I’m guessing that the eagle is sleeping or resting (or pining for the fjords). It does move its head a bit now and then.
Edit: And j66, I thought I saw a crack in one of the eggs earlier as well.
Damnit! On preview, I see I’ve been scooped on the “pining for the fjords” joke!
HA ha!
Neat. Aww, momma’s sleepin’.
I have the day off tomorrow and I have a bad head cold. (which means I’ll be on the couch all day probably) I’ll be keeping this tabbed in my browser, thanks!
Same here! I have been waiting for years for the opportunity to use that joke! Only to be finally beaten to the punch on a message board called “the straight dope” by someone who calls themselves Bumbershoot.
Again I say “HA ha!”
Actually, a very cool name. (not the name “straight dope”, but Bumbershoot) Also very cool thread, all jokes aside.
Thanks!
Sleeping eagle lies
In a tree, upon her nest
Little eaglet grows
In a shell beneath her breast
I did some calculatin’ based on last year’s dates. Egg #1 and egg #2 hatched in 37 days last year, egg #3 was 35 days. Based on a 37 day incubation period, this year egg #1 should hatch on April 1, egg #2 should hatch on April 4 and egg #3 should hatch on April 8.
When I said “today or tomorrow” in the OP, I was just repeating the info I got when my niece sent me the link. I don’t know where she got her information. At any rate, we should see a whole lotta hatchin’ goin’ on over the next several days!
Thank you for posting this… very cool watching!
I think it’s Daddy Eagle on the nest right now and he sure is doing a lot of rearranging of the twigs!
