And here I thought males never rearrange furniture without females making them do it.
Whichever one is sitting now is amazingly alert - head constantly moving from side to side. I think I’d have zonked out by now, just sitting there like that! (Too bad eagles can’t surf the Dope - you know (s)he’d be all over the boards posting like a mofo, bored out of his feathered skull!)
LOL… i was just talking to a friend on the phone, I had sent her the link this morning and we were both watching while talking, and we got to giggling about how boring it has to be to just SIT there, no TV, no computer, no video games… just endless sitting.
I am pretty sure it’s still the male on the nest unless I missed the changing of the guard, the stats at the bottom said he is the smalled of the 2 and when they switched out, this one was definitely the smaller.
Can’t wait to see the babies!
You saw them switch places? I was hoping to catch that!
They just zoomed in on what looked like a dead rabbit at the edge of the nest. Cool!
I just saw them trade places! The female, on the nest now, is definitely larger.
“Aw honey, not dead rabbit again!”
"I brought you a nice fresh cat when you were on the nest. That I caught myself! And did you save any for me? No! Then you show up with a 3 day old roadkill rabbit.
Sometimes I think I married a turkey vulture."
Mama just turned around and rearranged the eggs a bit so the camera zoomed in on the eggs. Very cool.
nevermind.
I’m getting google ads on that feed for BirdBGone pest bird removal.
She’s got her butt to the wind now. It’s blowing her wing feathers up exposing the lower white ones. Must feel good.
Odd experience. I just moved suddenly and she swung her head and stared straight into the camera, like she was looking at me. One of those moments when reality doesn’t seem to work quite right.
I’m pretty sure that’s the male on the nest now. He must have taken over late last night or early this morning. He was just moving around and I saw all three eggs intact. I hope today is the day, I really really really want to see at one of the eggs hatch!
I know Eagles are large birds but it’s hard to get a feel for the scale until you read the FAQ and it says the nest is 5’-6’ across and about the same in depth and weighs 1.5 tons.
Also I’m spending more time watching this than doing work.
Update: The male just rearranged the eggs and is facing into the wind now.
I just saw the changing of the guard!
Mama Eagle is on the nest!
Mama is rearranging the nest to her satisfaction.
Thanks again Bumbershoot (a hilariously cool name) for bringing this to attention! Fascinating.
My pleasure. I never thought it could be so interesting to watch a bird sitting on a nest, but I can’t stop watching. I hate it when something comes up here at work and I have to leave my desk.
Bumbershoot is a tune by my favorite group, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. Plus a bumbershoot is sort of like a parachute and I used to do a lot of skydiving. It made sense at the time.
I always forget how much more quickly spring comes here than the rest of the country - it’s surreal that there are no leaves on the trees.
I know! It’s 75F and sunny here in New Mexico. It looks so cold there!
