I wonder if I can get one of those fireplace ‘logs’ and burn it in the pit as a ‘recreational fire’? I have s little firewood too, so maybe roomie and I can hang out and drink beers. If the branches that have been in there since the UGA rules went into place catch fire, it’s an accident; right?
And then I can plant surplus strawberries in there.
I had strawberries in two places in my last yard - one was my bed where I weeded and watered and put a frame around them to keep the birds out. The other was the ones I left to fend for themselves. The pampered ones produced big fat berries (and lots of them!). The feral ones produced fewer, smaller berries (they didn’t get all the way to “tiny,” but they might over time).
I planted a tomato in one one those upsidedown things last week. Seems to be doing ok, planted about a dozen outside to so we’ll see.
In unrelated news I purchased three rat traps, the cage type. Hit One: They removed the soap without springing the trap. Hit Two: Ditto with bread. Hit Three: Trap is sprung, no rat inside, ants all over the hotdog!
It’s been two days since I planted the strawberries, and they haven’t produced any fruit yet! Doesn’t even look like they’re any bigger!
Roomie just went to bed. She came out of the bathroom and said, ‘Do you want to come see if the big, scary spider in the bathroom is worth saving?’ I was hoping for a giant house spider, but it’s too early for them yet. Wait 'till Autumn! Turns out it was a little spider about the size of my thumb nail. I coaxed him into the penalty jar with the handle of a toothbrush and admired him in the light. Roomie said I should put the lid on. I did, and evicted the little guy on the lawn. Roomie said she could sleep now.
I just talked to my insurance agent. They don’t insure strawberries.
No, wait… I mean that they can change my home insurance provider and increase the coverage and lower the premium. (Like, almost 1/3 what I’m paying now – and that will lower my monthly mortgage payment.) I have a couple of watches that have doubled (or more) in value since I bought them, so I might add a rider to cover them specifically. They will already be insured under the policy, but without the rider there’s a $1,000 deductible and no coverage for ‘mysterious disappearance’.
I bought a mango pitter yesterday. I’m thinking when the strawberries are ready I’ll have strawberries, mangoes, and bananas. I can buy some cream and whip it (whip it good!) for a little fruit salad.
Poor cat. Harvey finished his second round of amoxicillin the other day. Looks like he still might have a UTI. He’s been licking his butt (more than usual), squatting where he shouldn’t, and he dragged his butt on the rug earlier. He’s been eating anti-UTI dry food for the past few days, and roomie got him some cranberry pills to mix up into his wet food. (He didn’t eat it this morning.) Roomie called the vet, and we’re hoping he calls back soon. She’s just off of a 12-hour shift, so I’ll do the driving. We’re hoping we just need to pick up a different anti-biotic. (Last time this happened – several years ago – she gave Harvey two rounds of amoxicillin and then switched to a sulfa drug.)
I think I will get another Topsy Turvy and a Roma tomato plant. The strawberries are swaying gently in the breeze.
And now there are three new basil plants in a pot on the patio.
I was told yesterday that it’s too early for tomato plants. Once they are available and I’ve planted one, I’ll only need find a buffalo mozzarella plant and I can make fresh Caprese salad this Summer!
Most of the strawberry plants are doing well. One looks like it’s dying, but that’s not bad out of 18. I’ve turned the planter to give more sun to the smaller plants. Flowers are appearing, so we may have some fruit in a month. We went to Fred Meyer yesterday, and I got roomie a couple of small hummingbird feeders and red-stuff mix. She put one on the hook next to the strawberries.
I’ve noticed tomato plants are being sold now. Maybe next weekend I’ll buy one and a planter. I can get more basil at the same time. (It got down near freezing a couple of nights, and the basil I’d planted died.)
