And Now There is only One

I was just reading that there is only a single person left that was born in the 19th century

Buona salute, Emma. Brava!

Wow. She was 70 years old when we landed on the frikkin moon.

There are most certainly others, but they lack sufficient records to clear the bar to be certified as such.

That’s startling. My dad was born in the 19th century. Time flies.

The Wikipedia article on oldest living persons actually lists 3 people born in the 19th Century.

‘Born in the 1800s’ is not the same as ‘born in the 19th century’.

Thanks.

I forgot that the year 1900 is considered part of the 19th century so yes technically there are 3 alive from the 19th century but only one person from 1899.

Also, I really doubt that there would be any more unregistered births from 1899 and earlier as the areas where birth registrations not being done would generally not have a long life expectancy.

Then again, I have been proven wrong many times

Some of my grandparents were born in rural areas of the US around this time. They and their siblings did not get their births “registered” until the 1920s. I don’t think one of my grandfather’s ever got his birth registered.

Full on cradle to grave registration of people is sort of a modern idea in the US and many people are still left out. This presents problems for thousands of people with the new voter ID laws.

As I said, I could be wrong

I was reading about these supercentarians from the GRG research group and as mentioned in addition to parts of rural USA, most of the African countries and most of China did not have any registration of births until later in the 20th century.

The GRG group estimates that there are probably twice as many of these 110+ old people than the ones that they can positively identify.

That being said, that would only double the pre 1900s to 2 and increase the 19th century to 6.

Also, when interviewing these supercenturians, there was only one thing that they could identify as being in common, namely that they also had parents or siblings that were also long lived.

The other thing that surprises me is that even with all these records being looked at, nobody has even come close to breaking Mrs Calment’s record of 122 years (second place is 119 years) and generally the oldest person only usually only lives to 116 or 117 years old since the 122 year record life span

:+1:

Astute catch.

Same here, 1897.

He went over the top at Vimy Ridge.
