If Delhi traffic is anything like Bombay traffic, Delhi transit system should be congratulating itself on a good safety record, seriously.
Just to compare, Figures compiled by DMV and GTSC showed that 1,505 people were killed on New York’s roadways in 1998. That’s state, not city. Which is 5 people per day.

What raised my curiosity was the statement “Buses contribute majority of the accidents.”
Are people throwing themselves in front of buses, or are the bus drivers playing a giant game of bumper-cars?
Despite having a poulation of 14.37 million (and rapidly growing), there are only 2.6 mllion cars there, so perhaps the sheer numer of busses has something to do with it, but still, on its face the fatality rate associated with busses is remarkably high.
I’m glad they’re putting in a subway.
