And we rescued the other child!

As some of you may remember, we got our son into private school for his ninth grade year. His sister was also accepted, but we couldn’t afford to send both of them. The plan was to send him, and if he got good grades he would get a scholarship (or an extra year to save our money), then we could send our daughter.

I told the school this, and they seemed very concerned that she wouldn’t be starting her 6th grade with them, and offered a scholarship application. I told them I thought scholarships were not available until after the first year, but they said they do make exceptions due to financial circumstances.

We got this horribly complicated tri-fold application that took me three days to fill out. Meanwhile, my daughter had started 6th grade at the public school.

We sent off the application, and began helping our daughter with her homework and preparing our son for his new school.

This week the school called and asked if we had heard anything about the scholarship. I told her no, and she said she would call on our behalf. Later that day she called back and said we had been approved, and asked how much we could put toward ivygirl’s tuition. I told her I would talk to my husband and get back to her.

Ivylad and I talked about it, and we came up with a number that we could work with. He told the school, and the woman said she would check with “the powers that be.”

Then today, she called back, said it would work! I called my son, and he was so excited he volunteered to run down to the school (literally right around the corner) and pick up the paperwork we would need to fill out.

So, no more public school for our children! Now I MUST get a second job, as ivygirl is going to need a laptop next year…

You should be able to pick up a second-hand one for not very much. She’s not exactly going to be running complex simulations on it, is she? Yourself or Ivylad may even be able to scrounge one from work.

Congratulations! And honestly, I have no idea how much a laptop can cost. Do you think that the above suggestion from qts is workable? Keep us posted.

My grandfather instilled in me a love of learning and education, and it’s been amazingly valuable to me. Sounds like your kids are getting the same. Congradulations, and keep us posted!!

Excellent!! I’m really happy for you and yours!

Congrats! That sounds wonderful, ivylass. And you should be able to find a nice, secondhand laptop without too much difficulty–those are two very lucky kids

If you have one of those Recycler or Penny Saver type papers in your area, you should be able to find a used Pentium II laptop for only about $400. I did just this minute on the southern CA Recycler web page.

I hadn’t thought of a used laptop. The school has very specific requirements, and the one I got with my discount at CompUSA for my son is better than our home one. It has to come with a wireless card and Windows XP Pro, so I don’t think a used laptop will be cheaper in the long run.

Tomorrow is registration, Labor Day is orientation, then we’re off to the races on Tuesday!

I just can’t get over how the private school went to bat for us to get our daughter enrolled. They really helped us out, really went the extra mile. I am impressed.
