This is a group stage match up for our Democratic Primary World Cup. Everyone is invited to vote in the poll. Feel free to add comments about why you chose one of these candidates over the other one.
I like Steve Bullock, and I don’t actually trust Yang, but Yang at least has a vision.
Nope, abstaining from this one, too.
Bullock. I’m a bit tired of Yang’s cult clogging up my Twitter
If this is the World Cup, this must be like the Australia vs. Lithuania “just happy to be here” first round matchup.
If we could only combine Yang’s policies with Bullock’s experience and proven electability, we’d have a candidate I could be really enthusiastic about. As it is, I’m gonna sit this one out.
The Presidency is not an entry-level position. If Yang wants to run, he should go for some lower office first. His choice not to do so tells me that he’s not serious about it.
Instead of clicking Abstain, I’m abstaining from voting. If one of these is worthy, please make the case here.
Bullock has been a decent red-state Democratic governor. Yang is an entrepreneur with no political experience. Should be an easy choice, IMO.
This is by far the weakest pairing in the draw. Should’ve been Booker against one of these, and Klobuchar against the other, rather than Booker v. Klobuchar and Bullock v. Yang.
Bullock should be prepping his Senate* run. Yang shouldn’t even be here.
 Bullock.
*ETA: We need the goddamn Senate even more than we need the frickin’ White House right now. Run for Senate, Steve.
I actually like Bullock. Executive experience, moderate, knows how to talk to rural voters, has experience as a labor attorney. He could do well with industrial Midwest voters in the general. I’m keeping my fingers crossed he can heat up a little.
Bullock seems like he might be an interesting candidate. Yang is Ron Paul, warmed over. Not a difficult choice.
OK. Bullock seems alright, maybe even electable.
Ron Paul warmed over?? Ron Paul’s claim to fame was being the Libertarian of the Republican party. Yang’s claim to fame is wanting the government to give every family in America a base salary.
Bullock seems interesting–from what little I’ve seen of him.
Agree that many of these need to focus on the Senate. The dems need to take that back in 2020 as well as keep the house. Putting McConnell at the end of the unemployment line would be an added bonus.
Oh absolutely Ron Paul warmed over. Or perhaps more accurately, the Democrats’ warmed-over version of Ron Paul.
By which I mean:
–a candidate whose policy positions are out of the mainstream of his own party, let alone the overall electorate,
–who is revered and loved by a small but incredibly enthusiastic number of people,
–who spend enormous energy trying to talk up his relevance,
–though he barely registers on the radar screens of everybody else.
For both of them, maybe their ideas will turn out to be the unquestioned norm twenty years form now. But I suspect for both they’ll end up being the road not taken.
Oh all right, that explanation makes sense. I haven’t encountered his small but incredibly enthusiastic faction of people, nor have I seen how his policy positions are outside of his party’s mainstream. But that’s probably because I fit into that final bullet points – he barely registers on my radar screen. Thanks for the explanation.
Yeah, he’s got a small number of very enthusiastic followers who post about him 20 times a day on Twitter. Universal Basic Income is a fine topic to discuss in your college Poli Sci class or in a late night dorm bull session, but it ain’t gonna play in Peoria.
There’s a thread on Yang in this forum. I haven’t read it all by any means, but recently at least it’s effectively become someone’s personal blog on Yang. You can see pictures of Yang supporters doing community service! Information on Yang-related video games! Voluminous details about Yang’s plug for Universal Basic Income and earnest explanations about why so many economists are wrong about VAT. If you were curious and wanted to dip your toe into one corner of Yang’s fandom, you could check it out.
Or not!
