I asked this over at XDA as well but sometimes it can be slow to get a response.
My phone is a Nexus 5 running Android 5.0.
On about 5 of my contacts this is an issue. I’ve gone in and edited contacts and on the 5 in question its just their area code and phone number as it should be and no addition info in the other fields. However when I call them, it says calling:15627245362718…followed by their actual area code and telephone number.
The call goes through although on these contacts but there’s a delay before it starts ringing. Any idea where this string of numbers could be coming from? BTW, its the same string ahead of each contact.
As I said, i’ve looked at how their numbers are entered as contacts and that string is not there. I also checked how they are set up by going into my Google account on my laptop. Set up correctly. I did a factory reset and let them be imported again from my google account and they show up with that random string of digits again.
If you have a google account (which you would, probably) go to contacts.google.com and look at the contacts there. I maintain all of my contacts there since you can add much more information than you can on the phone. You should be able to find the number string and delete it there.
I’ve never had this problem, but I’m wondering where in Google contacts would this string of numbers be, and why does Google put them in automatically?
What if you again tried deleting the contact and re-adding, except put in a different phone number this time, like one digit is wrong (just as an experiment).
Then, if it still happens with that contact, once more delete it and re-add it but change the spelling of the name by one character (and go back to the correct phone number).
This class of errors sometimes apears when a string of characters is stored as a number, and the number is too big, or there is a bug in the routines that convert the internal number into a string of characters for display.
Would this class of error cause dialling problems? Yes, if the same routine was used to convert the number into a dial string. No, if a different routine was used, for example if the number was diretly converted to dial tones.
But no, i dont use Picasa. And also since the string of numbers is the same for multiple contacts I dont think it’s the Picasa ID. Also one of the contacts with the number string is an IPhone user.
FTR Why I asked: if you had Verizon (or presumably also Sprint or US Cellular), the Backup Assistant might keep restoring the old numbers. Which wouldn’t explain why they were there in the first place! But you have GSM so I’m not sure if that applies.
I’m starting to think it may be a defect in the phone itself? Now numbers that are not stored as contacts are doing it. I’ll dial 1+area code+number and it’ll display “dialing the number i entered” Dial the same number again and that crazy string pictured above shows up
Well, this appears to be an issue with Android 5.0. I’m surprised I haven’t found any other reports from Nexus 5 users. I reinstalled Android 4.4.4 and the issue went away. Installed 5.0 again and it returns.
