Animation that "gets dust in your eyes"...

I’m a cynical, jaded guy, not much affects me emotionally, in fact, I think I’m part Vulcan, as I have an almost ironclad Vulcan-esque control over my emotions (yet I have the temper and short fuse of a Klingon, interesting combo, that), I almost never display emotions in public, as it’s a sign of weakness and illogic…

that said, there are some shows that somehow cause all the dust in the room to somehow get in my eyes, I’d understand if I was watching them on my powerful home theatre system, but the effects even occur when watching them on my little 13" display MacBook…

There is, of course, the Suuuupermannnn! scene from The Iron Giant (nice re-edit/AMV here), that’s pretty much a given

Another great animated show that NEEDS to be released on DVD is When the Wind Blows, I’ve seen most of the Post Apocalyptic/ “Day After” nuclear war films, The Day After, Threads, and others, but WTWB just hits me hard in a way the others simply can’t, maybe it’s because you spend the first part of the show really getting to know the Bloggs, as a nice, pleasant elderly English couple, they become real people, then, after the bomb detonates and you watch the Bloggs suffer from the progressing effects of Radiation Sickness, all while cheerfully hoping that “The Powers that Be will get (to) us in the end” and that “The Government” will make it all better, yet you know full well that they’re doomed it just crushes your spirit, it has to be one of THE darkest, most depressing, soul crushing animated programs I have ever watched, yet I love it for that same unfailing honesty and refusal to paste on a stupid “Hollywood” happy ending…

on a side note, I think that Jim Bloggs honestly believed all the Council/Government crap and really thought they were going to help them survive, they just had to tough it out, “Stiff Upper Lip” and all that rot right up to the end, wheras Hilda figured out near the end that they were doomed, I also think she figured out that the pamphlets were bunk quite early on in the show and was just putting on a strong front for Jim, I’m sure she knew what the paper bags they were getting into at the end were really for…

What animated programs “get dust in your eyes”?

I habve to admit that I get choked up at that point in The Iron Giant, too.
As I’ve said several times, the end of the “Private Diaries of Adam and Eve” segment in Will Vinton’s Claymation masterpiece **The Adventures of Mark Twain ** is a real tear-jerker. Excellently done “Wherever She was, there was Eden.”

It’s partly because it’s very well done, and partly because you realize that it’s the way Twain himself felt about his (at this point in his life) lost wife Livy.

“Robot test #12. Go see Pixar’s UP. If your date doesn’t cry, robot.” —Nathan Fillion

Dumbo. When mamma is rocking Dumbo through the bars in her cage and the song “Baby Mine” is playing. sniff

The answer is the ending to the Futurama episode “Jurassic Bark.”

I tried to find a clip of it, but Fox is notorious about cracking down on “copyright violations” (though shouldn’t just a short one minute clip be fair use?"

Oh Hell, Jurassic Bark. :frowning: Honestly, it was sad, but there was a kind of beauty to it. That’s why I was so ticked when the whole thing was retconned by Bender’s Big Score.

Toy Story 2: “When Somebody Loved Me

Since Jurassic Bark has been taken, I’ll offer the end of Mother Simpson. And the end of Maggie Makes Three.

Grave of the Fireflies.

The Futurama episode The Luck of the Fryrish where Fry digs up his brother’s grave to get his 9-leaf clover back, and discovers that it’s his brother’s son’s grave, and he was named after him. As he puts the clover back, “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” by Simple Minds begins.

Yes, the Will Vinton claymation Mark Twain movie was great too, in addition to the aforementioned Adam and Eve section, “The Mysterious Stranger” was just plain creepy…

If anime belongs, may I suggest The Place Promised in Our Early Days. And when it is out, Five CM per Second. The latter is sure to put something in your eyes.

Those are really atypical animes - no giant robots, no over-arching plot, no evil nemesis. Do give those a try if you can find them

I’ve always felt that The Prince of Egypt was really under appreciated. The bit at the end, when the Isrealites are finally freed, and are leaving the city, always chokes me up.

A 70ish one.

Ricky Ticky Tavey?

About a mongoose that a boy saves and eventually the weiner rat saves him with high cost?

Nitpick: Rikki Tikki Tavi

I just finished watching WTWB again, and at least for me, the part that hit me the hardest was Hilda’s simple line in Part 8 “Shall we get into the paper bags again”, spoken in a weak, shaky, broken voice, She knew their fate, knew they weren’t going to survive, and just “gave up”, but did so with the stereotypical English “Stiff Upper Lip”…

At that point, a freak major dust-storm blew through my bedroom…

The Day After and Threads simply cannot compare to this simply animated, brilliant cartoon, TDA is watered down wishy-washyness, Threads goes for extreme graphic realism, but is saddled with one-dimensional characters, WTWB’s protaginists, Jim and Hilda Bloggs, even though they are nothing more than ink and paint on paper and a couple of voice actors seem more real than the actual actors in TDA and Threads

In all honesty, when I first saw WTWB, back in high school, it was horrifying and heartbreaking, but also was a turning point for me, it started me down the path of Accurate, Realistic Observational Techniques (called “Cynicism” by those who do not possess it) made me distrust and dislike all elected officials and governmental institutions…

To paraphrase xkcd:

I would use the Futurama episode with Fry and his dog, but even spambots cry at that

Yeah, but I admit I got a little bit misty.

A lot of the Japanese stuff I watch gets to me, but Grave of the Fireflies was so horrific to be beyond sad. It’s numbing for me. Hope that makes sense.

Yeah, I wasn’t sure I posted the right kind of movie. “Gets dust in your eyes” is maybe not a good descriptor for this one - more like makes you bawl uncontrollably.
