There was an anime set in China, about the political intrigues & wars there in classical times.
I can’t recall the title.
Suggestions?
There are a few that fit the criterion.
First that comes to my mind is Fushigi Yuugi, the gooily romantic and hgihly addictive story of Miaka, trapped in ancient China and devoted to a Feng Shui god called Suzaku. There were a few wars in it, and a fair amount of political intrigue, but it was mostly romance.
I can’t think of any others right now, but I know they exist.
I can’t admit to knowing any (and I’ve watched most of the ones you can find in the video stores here)… Though I haven’t seen Fushigi Yuugi–so that could be it.
I doubt it’s Romance of Three Kingdoms. It’s never been licensed (and probably never will at this point) and even through unofficial channels there’s only two episodes available in English. It’s also not very good which is why there’s only those two episodes. Extremely low animation quality; I thought I was watching something from the seventies when I saw it and it was from 1991.
On the other hand there was a movie from the same point based on Romance of the Three Kingdoms which I have not seen but it appears to be different from the television series. It did get a video release by the now long gone Streamline. See:

Now I’m curious about that movie, I may dig it up myself…
It’d help if you were a bit more specific. What level of magical realism? Or just politics? Saiyuki has lots of demons, Senkaiden Houshin Engi has lots of gods. If there’s no magical elements, you can throw most series out.
No magic that I recall…
