Trigun
Outlaw Star
Afro Samurai
Neo Evangelion
FoolyCooly
DeathNote
Thanks.

Fullmetal Alchemist
Detective Conan. All 698 episodes (and counting)
Puella Magi Madoka Magica. One of the few that’s affected me deeply recently. Evangelion doesn’t hold a candle to this level of twistedness… a good, tight package.
It doesn’t seem like you like comedies, but Ixion Saga was reasonably entertaining…
Netflix doesn’t have a very good anime selection.
I love One Piece, though it is MASSIVE (500+ episodes and counting!). I actually had to stop watching because I just couldn’t keep up, but the writing is fantastic and the character designs are wacky as can be.
Just about anything by Satoshi Kon, though Paranoia Agent and Paprika are my favorites.
And, my personal favorite: Monster. I’m not really going to say what it’s about, because the less you know about it before going into it the better, but it’s creepy, suspenseful, cerebral, and brutal. It’s got better plot twists than Death Note, and has fantastic character development. It’s 74 episodes, so it’s a bit on the lengthy side, but not a single one is wasted. And it’s got the creepiest, most pants-shitting villain I think I’ve ever seen in fiction, let alone anime. (And if you can’t get ahold of the anime for whatever reason, the manga is practically identical, so you wouldn’t be missing much plot.)
Gurren Lagann is an excellent complement to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Epic. A+
The Girl Who Leaped Through Time is a charming movie. I liked the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. A few warnings though: the first 2 episodes look pretty weak on a first viewing: you have to get to the end of the third I think to get a sense of the series. And the 2nd season is universally panned except by like 2 people on the internet, one of whom is me. Seriously: watch at your peril.
Code Geass is fun. Corpse Princess starts out as monster of the week for about 6 episodes, then starts building characterization.
Eden of the East was a fan favorite of 2010. Haibane Renmei finally got a reprinted DVD: solid series.
I didn’t like Paranoid Agent so much. Sophmoric in my view, though admittedly I never finished it. Has its fans.
Full Metal Alchemist is actually 2 series. I’ve seen the first one, which is ok. I just started the 2nd (it’s called Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood) and I see that they’ve upped the quality. Also, the first one had an ending put together by the animators since the series had not ended. Brotherhood didn’t have that problem, thus the underlying material is better.
Battle Angel would make a great anime series IMHO. Oh well two eps. Is better than nothing.
There are lots of threads here containing everyone’s anime favorites. To get a broader consensus, check out the Top Anime pages here:
Note that even though it says “Top Anime Series” at the top, it actually includes anime movies and series.
One I recently watched and loved that I discovered via that list is “Haibane Renmei”, an older show I had not heard of before. It’s great!
I bought Haibane simply because of the picture on the cover and loved it.
