ankle sprain...new bruise

Ok, this is my first serious ankle sprain so this might be a normal part of the healing process. I suffered a 3rd degree sprain 8 days ago and it seems to be healing but about 4 days ago, I developed a very purple (what I assume is a )bruise just beneeth my toes. It doesn’t hurt at all and I can move my toes without any pain. It doesn’t seem to be getting worse or better. What could that be? I have to bowl on tuesday, will my toes still be attached?

Bruising normally doesn’t cause toes to fall off.

Thanks for the link…I’m just a little curious about the location. The main injury area is of course swolen, bruised and tender which I understand. The new bruise is in a completely different area of the foot…but it’s probably nothing. I guess I’ll find out.

I’ve spained/broken my ankles over a dozen times, and late brusing in the toe area was common. I don’t know why it happens but IIRC, it was only in more severe injuries that I noticed discolouration in toes (course I probably paid more attention when it hurt more).

You have a Third degree sprain and you want to go bowling after less than 2 weeks? OUCH! I don’t recommend it, mainly because I am currently recovering from a Frist degree sprain, and after nearly 2 weeks, it still hurts to walk too much/stand for too long/do anything overly strenuous. I know bowling isn’t exactly the toughest physical sport in the world, but to do it properly you have to shift your weight alot and you might aggravate the injury.

My SO had a 2nd degree sprain years ago and he says he was out of commission for a good month or so, and had 2-3 weeks of physio!

If your ankle is bruising as the result of a sprain (especially 3rd degree), then there is a good chance that your ligaments are torn, and it can take MONTHS to fully heal. Take it easy on your foot, limit any lateral (side-to-side) motion, and be careful with it! Find out if any physio is possible for you - my doctor (on a student health plan) said that even I could get physio if I didn’t feel it was healing properly, and she gave me a list of home excersises to do to improve my ankle.

NOTE: IANAD, but having seen one for a sprain recently, and having both my SO and his father (who is a doctor, and has had sprains) tell me about them, as well as with the literature I was given, I feel pretty confident in what I said…but then, as I said, IANAD, so take this with a grain of salt!

I sprained my ankle pretty badly Tuesday, and this toe-swelling showed up by about Thursday night. It had me baffled too.

Only the ligaments on the sides are strained, I can walk straight forward with a really strong brace, but definately will go down if I do any side steppin’. I already missed one week of bowling and we lost all 3. I have to get back in there.

You’re bowling, getting real into a heated match (or whatever you call a bowling contest), rolling strike, after strike, after strike and you forget that you have a severly injured ankle. In haste you put you weight down the wrong way and SNAP! Broken ankle.

For the next six to twelve weeks you’ll be in cast. Ever been in a cast before? If not, I can assure you that the first question everyone asks is “wha’d ya do?”

The bruising between your toes is just blood pooling there from yor injuries higher up in your ankle. If you look at the bottom of your foot, it’s probably got some purple spots too.

Coilean , I did bowl (and I use that term lightly) tonight and did horribly, however I did make it through 3 games without busting my ass up there. I was carrying a 198 average and managed a 464 set… :smack:
