Looking at the liner notes for the 2008 3 disc Magic Moments: The Definitive Burt Bacharach Collection, the writing credit for “Walk On By” is listed as (Bacharach/Sinclair/Cohen/David). Every other time I have ever seen the writing credit, it has only ever been (Bacharach/David). NOTE: The writing credit is even (Bacharach/David) at the linked Allmusic.com page for the compilation- but on the actual paper of the insert booklet from the CD, Sinclair and Cohen are included.
So, I tried to Google “Walk On By” Bacharach Sinclair Cohen David but it wasn’t helpful. There are so many result for “Walk On By” Bacharach David. The names Sinclair and Cohen are too common and just happen to randomly show up in unrelated references that happen to be on a page that also references “Walk On By” Bacharach David. I did see one result, in the preview text on the search results page I read “produced by Nigel Sinclair and Steve Cohen”. Following that link, I saw that that credit had nothing to do with “Walk On By”. It was a credit for the Billy Joel documentary The Last Play at Shea that happened to be mentioned on a page that also mentioned “Walk On By”.
However… now I had a Sinclair and a Cohen working together on something related to popular music. Surely this must be the very same Sinclair and Cohen! I went to the Wiki page for Last Play at Shea and, as luck would have it, both Nigel Sinclair and Steve Cohen had links to their own pages!
Turned out to be a dead-end lead.
“Walk On By” was first recorded in 1964, when the above mentioned Nigel Sinclair was 16 years old. Not impossible that a 16 year old might have worked on a song with Bacharach and David in 1964 but highly improbable… especially given this was a 16 year old in Northumberland, U.K. while Bacharach and David were based in the U.S. The link for Steve Cohen goes to the page for Tennessee Representative Steve Cohen, who I don’t even think is the correct person for the Last Play at Shea credit, let alone being the person referenced in the “Walk On By” credit.
So… does anyone have any good info on the anomalous songwriting credit? As far as I can tell, other than the booklet in this 2008 CD release, the writing credit has always been (Bacharach/David). Why would two other names suddenly show up and only in this release?
If no info, any decent guesses?
Maybe Burt or Hal owed money to Sinclair and Cohen and had to pay it off by giving the two guys a writing credit on a hit song?
