Another cat problem

Very frustrating. Several months ago both cats, around 12 years old, were eating less and less of their kibble, which has been their only food since kittens.

After a couple of days, as it persisted, took them to the vet and he found badly inflamed gums, cavities, etc. Had several teeth removed (from them, not from me), and gave them antibiotics for a while, and then they seemed to get better.

They had a multitude of tests done which showed everything was normal.

Switched to canned food from the vet, which they seemed to love. They should, it costs enough!

Then over time, they seemed to be eating less of that too, but an amount the vet says is OK for their age. One is doing fine, but the other is throwing up more than usual, has some loose stools, on and off. He acts fine, but something must be wrong. Back to vet, more tests, all normal.

This continued, so took him to another vet for second opinion, some more tests, and he could find nothing wrong at all.

It seems to me that he has had every organ known to the feline species tested, with nothing positive. He is losing weight, and will eat if I sit for about 15 minute each time, feeding little dabs of food at a time. He won’t touch the old kibble, and other canned foods do not interest him at all.

He drinks a normal amount of water, and visits the litterbox regularly. Twice in the last few days, he has dropped a little bit of stool on the floor, seemingly without noticing, something he never did before. When he has to throw up, he caterwauls loudly, often giving us time to get him to a sink.

We are really worried about the poor guy, but as nothing much else to test, have no idea what to do. This just symptomatic of old age? He’s not that old. Any ideas?

Has the vet checked for a tumor in the intestines or bowel?

IANAV, but about a year ago, one of our cats had feline hyperthyroidism, which caused her to stop eating and lose a lot of weight. To correct it, she could either have had surgery, been on medication the rest of her life, or get a radioactive iodine injection. We opted for the injection, and she’s doing fine now. By looking at her, you’d think nothing was ever wrong with her.
