Another cat thread and help needed

If you decide to continue calling her Kitty, you could still jazz it up to something like Kitty Le Claw or something? I got my baby girl (who had to be put to sleep on 11/30/2012, I’m sad to say) shortly after Will & Grace debuted and I was a huge fan of the show. I named her Anastasia Beaverhausen (Karen’s alias) but always called her Anna…

I still don’t feel ‘ready’ for a new kitty quite yet, but I’ve been thinking about names anyway. I think my next one will be named after a character from Smallville…Chloe or Tess are my favorites. It will definitely be a female because I inherited my grandma’s cat, now a 14-15yr old male, who makes freaky demonic-like sounds around other male cats or around dogs…so I’ll go with a female feline again.

It might be the mimosas from brunch talking, but this had me giggling like a little girl.

I hope she’s fine, and once she figures out she’s not getting out regularly enough, she’ll likely take to the litter box more readily. Yay for her new home!

It’ll drive the admin people insane at the vet’s.

The texture reminds me of coursely-ground coffee beans. It’s made from walnuts, so it starts out smelling like walnuts, but after a day or so the walnut smell goes away and it smells like nothing. Not even cat pee. I’m serious. I cannot get over how it absorbs the odor. I can stick my head in the box and take a deep breath and not smell a thing.

We clean their boxes twice a day, but sometimes the cleaning doesn’t coincide with their multiple uses. And on those occasions when there was already pee and/or poo in the box, sometimes our older cat would pee or poo just outside of the box. We had to start putting puppy piddle pads down in front of the box “just in case.” That hasn’t happened a single time since we switched to this litter.

The 14lb bag is $15.00. If you try it and don’t love it, I’ll reimburse you the cost.

Another vote for indoor cat. They’ll live longer, happier and safer lives. There’s too much bad out there for a cat nowadays.

You rock, Chefguy.

She’s been inside for the past few days and isn’t all that thrilled. She paces from front door to back, or just sits in the widows (which we open so she can at least have the smells). I got some of that Blue Buffalo litter and she seems much more amenable to using it. The other stuff was a heavily perfumed product that none of us liked, and that I’m sure wasn’t good for her. Also found a no-grain, no-carb cat food that she likes and that doesn’t break the bank.

Does she have elevated lookouts like tall cat trees? Our attempt to convert an outdoor cat into a happy indoor-only cat is still a work in progress, but providing him with tall places to hang out and stare out the windows has greatly improved his disposition.

Beelzebubba - Just a quick Piper update. She’s seriously friendly now. Whenever I’m in the yard she comes up to the fence - she doesn’t come in because of the dogs, but waits for me and walks me down to the barn. I had a new lawn mower delivered last weekend and she was up rubbing on the delivery men’s ankles. She’s turned in to an all-around nice cat.

Chefguy - Congrats on your new best friend!

Chefguy - You could try picking a handful of grass for her to munch on inside - my cats love when I do that for them. (of course then it’s barfed up all over the house for the next couple hours…) Might help her adjust to the inside life quicker.
Have you got a vet appt set up for her yet?

Shayna - I am definitely going to try that litter! Thanks for the tip! I’ve been through so many kinds and can’t stand any. Cats are currently using Fresh Step because it’s one of the few they tolerate.

May I ask which food? I have a borderline diabetic kitty and have a hard time finding low carb foods he will eat. Thanks!

Yay! (And whew! Don’t you hate it when you recommend something so highly and the person ends up not liking it? )

And a hearty thank you from me, too, for taking this kitty in. You rock!

Have you considered getting her a cat harness and taking her outside with you on that? Our rescued-from-outdoors-kitty loves his harness (though we don’t use it anymore since we screened in the back - if you want to try one, I’ll send you the one we got Emma, who is terrified of it and never used it).

You’re so welcome. In 30 years I’ve tried everything there is, too. If this company ever goes out of business or discontinues this product (pfth pfth) I will be devastated.

If she is a Meowslim you’ll have to have her mice slaughtered Halal instead of live feeding. I have a 13 y.o. girl kitty who hurt her foot 11 years ago and healed completely but she still remembers to hold it up and limp if there’s something she wants.
Protect all kitties from organophosphate residues and people food! Almost all their health problems start with those two bad things.

**Shayna **- From the OP

Shayna, I’ll try that out next time I hit the pet supply, and I don’t even need a personal guarantee! I liked the (non)scent of the other bag I had, just not the texture. It was a little too reminiscent of the material I was trying to sift out of it, if you know what I mean.

We found that shoulder-height or higher perches made our cats a lot happier about being indoors, especially if they could look out the window or pat our heads as we walked by.

My indoor cats love this cat grass that grows in the bag. It gets pretty tall in there so they can’t pull it up by the roots so easily (as they do with shallower containers). If I forget to start a new container while they’re eating the first one they retaliate by eating my plants.

Seconding the tall cat tree recommendations. I do hope you keep her an indoor kitty as it’s so much safer. And after following the earlier thread I am glad you ended up with Miss Kitty. Keep us posted.

Oy. :smack: It’s been so long since I read the OP, I’d forgotten he’d written that. I’m old. That’s my excuse, and I’m sticking to it.

I tried pellets once (though not this brand) and hated them, too. Hated, hated, hated. They were impossible to scoop so that the box got clean! I have no idea why they still even make the stuff.

Any news? How’s she doing?

It’s called “Pure-Vita” from KLN. This is a family-owned business that makes nothing but pet food. The 6.6 pound bag was about $19.

Shayna;

We took her for her first vet visit yesterday, which she of course hated. Despite what the neighbor told us, she has had zero vaccinations (at least since kitty shots), so she got a double dose of that, plus a worming pill, plus a topical flea/tick application. Basically, it looks like she may have some joint issues, but it’s really hard to tell what’s going on. The vet felt ‘clicks’ in the elbow joints. Q’itih was very quiet and compliant until the vet started manipulating the sore leg, but once the joint popped, she was fine. Sounds to me like a dislocation issue, which is what I thought to begin with.

She’s a little lethargic today from the shots, but I think she’ll bounce back no problem. The vet recommended wet food, but she doesn’t tolerate it very well. We’ll see how it goes. She does the scarf and barf thing, so we have to monitor how much food she gets at one time. I’ll see about posting pics this PM.

Aaaaand, here she is in all her cuteness.

Oh wow, she’s beautiful. I’m so glad she has you to [del]push around[/del] live with.
