Another child in hot car question. How would you best render aid?

There are 2 threads going. One about parents coping after losing a child in a hot car and another asking if you would immediately break the window if you saw a child in that situation.

After calling 911, what would be the proper first aid in this situation? You’re walking through a parking lot in July, you notice a toddler in a car seat, you bust the window and pull them out. The child is semi conscious but still breathing. My first instinct may be to pour some water on them, and get them near a/c or a fan,the idea that lowering their core temperature is the most urgent need, but maybe that would be a dangerous shock to their body? What should a person do?

You’re insticts are spot on, sponge rather than pour water on them and once the child becomes more alert, give them water to drink.

Loosen and/or remove layers of clothing. Sponge the patient’s head and armpits with cool water. Move patient to cool area in shade.

Is there a reason that pouring is bad (assuming you keep it away from their nose and mouth if they are unconscious)? Unlike most responsible adults, I don’t tend to keep a sponge on me at all times.

Sponge is a verb, any kind of wet cloth will do.

Hermitian ~ the idea behind it is not to cool the child down too rapidly, if you put them into a cold (rather than cool) environment it can cause the body to react as if it needs to protect itself from hypothermia instead so it could actually raise the core temperature and that in turn can cause seizures.
