Another deleting porn question.

I know topics like this have probably been covered before but these are two new problems regarding clearing your porn trail.

Recently, my computer has been having a pop-up animation of some naked chick…um…well…pleasing herself:eek:. Having my computer in the middle of the family kitchen makes this an important issue:rooleyes:. I have tried deleting all cookies, and the only websites I have had open when this occurs is AudioGalaxy and Straight Dope. I just cleared out my entire cache, cookies, and history to see if that would work so I may have fixed it and not know it yet. How does one stop this?

My other issue is another porn site that has somehow worked its way into my machine. I am using IE 5.5 and when I press the “Search” button, sure enough it pops up instead of the “Search” function. How the hell do I get this out?

I know some of you have some experience…

Not sure about IE5.5’s search engine problem… but you might be able to get around the other problem by using a pop-up killer tool. I use Popup Killer, from http://software.xfx.net/ which is pretty good. You can set maximum IE windows open, as well as stopping most pop-up traffic. There are other bits of software designed in a similar vein.

Hope this helps,
Max.

Another pop-up killer is WebWasher.

Download and run AdAware to get rid of ANY secret cookies, programs, and hidden spam-generating crap. It’s a fantastic program, and will very likely solve your problem.

It could also POSSIBLY be a program on your hard drive. See, I have a super-fast cable modem, and some of those sites have occasionally installed programs directly onto my computer (usually only on the desktop). Since my modem is so fast, I didn’t even have time to hit cancel. However, I’ve never seen one like you’re describing. Well, just thought I’d add my input.

I second Ad-Aware. It is the best at geting rid of these annoying things without messing up Windows. It even got rid of Comet Cursor after my daughter accidently let it download.

To fix your search problem:

Click Tools | Internet Options

Click the Programs Tab

Click Reset Web Settings

Deja probably has something that will help if nothing else will. Just search their archives.

I work on PC’s, and I’ve had users complain that certain sites have somehow gotten on their favorites list, even without the user putting them there. I’ve also been told that these certain sites will change the default home page.

Yep. I’ve ummmm…heard about[sub]yeah that’s it[/sub] both happening. Although that is an easy fix. This one I am still working on.

I am begining to wonder if it is actually the AudioGalaxy website. I know they do have pop-ups but I kind of doubted that a larger MP3 trading site would have THOSE kind. Maybe not. But anyway, thanks for the help so far.

I am not a computer type, but I once fixed the search problem described in the OP by hitting search, then “customize.” When I chose a search engine from that screen, the porn disappeared.

Good luck.

  1. The next time it pops up. Right click on Properties
  2. Delete that file.
  3. Get that website that it comes from, and put it on the “Restricted Sites List”
  4. On the restricted list, put a check next to disable on everything you can.
  5. Get the shareware software mentioned.
