Another Google Earth discovery

I searched and couldn’t find a previous reference on these Boards. I thought this was pretty amazing:

For those who want to look in their browser:

Google Maps link

For those who want to use Google Earth:

kmz file

Now that is cool. How the hell do you find something like that?

That’s weird. It looks like a cruise missile flying over Utah. Someone trying to wipe out the Mormons?

I guess now’s a good a time as any to admit to being a total dumbass. What is it I’m looking at here?

That’s an airplane. The wings are very faint – they must be painted some dark colour.

I can’t claim credit, i’m afraid. It was posted on another message board where i post.

But if you want to see weird Google Earth shit, hang out at the Google Earth Community. There are thousands of people who apparently have nothing better to do than search every bit of available coverage and find stuff like that. It’s a lot of fun.

You know, i think you’re right. Zooming in very close does show faint, dark wings. Well, that’s disappointing.

You’re right. I can faintly see them there, though even then they look pretty narrow.

I liked it better when it was a cruise missile.

They look a little too thin to be aircraft wings.

Some cruise missiles have wings like that.

There’s no question that it is, indeed, a cruise missile.

‘Bout time. Fuckin’ Osmonds piss me off.

Yeah, but what would a cruise missile be doing flying over Utah?

It’s an MD-80, DC-9, B-717, or possibly CRJ.

It’s a Regional Jet.

Look here.

Well, they ain’t got no wheels, so they can’t roll.

[sub]Damn it! I want it to be a cruise missile on the way to decimate Provo![/sub]

Well done!

Damn. You’re right. Dark wings and tail, and I can see the cockpit windows now.

I’m a little disappointed.

As seen on Google Sightseeing.

What makes it more confusing to look at is that what appears to be the tail-plane is actually a ghost image of the left wing. This makes it look as though the aircraft is shorter and that the wing is further aft than would be usual for a passenger jet. The true tail-plane is very nearly invisible and is some distance behind the rear white protusions (engines.)
