Considering that it was found by aerial survey, I’m surprised that this new one wasn’t found, as well. They’ve been over this area many times and have excavated heavily. I’m really surprised that previous surveys failed to find this new one.
And, yeah, stone circles aren’t all that rare*, but finding a new one – especially this close to the famous and impressive Stonehenge IS a big deal, as they’re certain to be related.
*When we visited Ireland several years back, Pepper Mill wanted to see a stone circle. We passed by a great many of them – but they’re mostly on private land, and the owners don’t want visitors because they don’t want to spring for insurance. The real challenge was finding one we could actually visit.
With the Stonehenge Riverside Project and now the Stonehenge Hidden Landscape Project, there is a concerted effort being made to locate such structures.
This may be the same one I read about a while back.
I remember thinking at the time “smaller version of Stonehenge eh? well that’ll be Spinal Tap references all round then” and you know what? not a sausage. No-one mentioned it at all. How is that possible?
And now you guys have a thread, 11 entries already and no-one mentions Spinal Tap. What the hell is going on? This is not the Straight Dope I know and tolerate, this is not the way the world works, my faith in fellow slackers and geeks is shaken.
