Another henge found at Stonehenge.

BBC link..

The new “henge” is about 900m (2,950ft) from the giant stones

Archaeologists have discovered a second henge at Stonehenge, described as the most exciting find there in 50 years.

The circular ditch surrounding a smaller circle of deep pits about a metre (3ft) wide has been unearthed at the world-famous site in Wiltshire.*

Seriously

I didn’t think that henges were all that rare.

They aren’t particularly (depending on how you define “rare”), but finding a [del]new[/del] previously unknown one is.

Wasn’t there theories about a wooden ‘hedge’ being close part? Is this another different timber hedge or was it what they were looking for?

What did they find 50 years ago that was more exciting?

Not a theory – “Woodhenge” is a reality

Considering that it was found by aerial survey, I’m surprised that this new one wasn’t found, as well. They’ve been over this area many times and have excavated heavily. I’m really surprised that previous surveys failed to find this new one.
And, yeah, stone circles aren’t all that rare*, but finding a new one – especially this close to the famous and impressive Stonehenge IS a big deal, as they’re certain to be related.

*When we visited Ireland several years back, Pepper Mill wanted to see a stone circle. We passed by a great many of them – but they’re mostly on private land, and the owners don’t want visitors because they don’t want to spring for insurance. The real challenge was finding one we could actually visit.

I don’t think Holehenge is going to have the tourists flocking in.

Well, not so rare that it’s been less than a year since the last discovery of a henge close to Stonehenge was announced.

With the Stonehenge Riverside Project and now the Stonehenge Hidden Landscape Project, there is a concerted effort being made to locate such structures.

Paging Eddie Izzard.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you Baconhenge.

You called?

CMC fnord!

This may be the same one I read about a while back.
I remember thinking at the time “smaller version of Stonehenge eh? well that’ll be Spinal Tap references all round then” and you know what? not a sausage. No-one mentioned it at all. How is that possible?
And now you guys have a thread, 11 entries already and no-one mentions Spinal Tap. What the hell is going on? This is not the Straight Dope I know and tolerate, this is not the way the world works, my faith in fellow slackers and geeks is shaken.

 This news has me totally unhenged!

Oooh, a woodhenge, eh? Luxury! When I was a kid, we had a paperhenge and we were glad to have it, I tell ya.

Ah, so from now on it’s Stonehenges. An err and a spare, I suppose.

So there’s Stonehenge and Woodhenge. But I doubt they’ll find any remains of Strawhenge.

It got crushed.

By a dwarf.

Well 70 years ago they found Sutton Hoo

I wonder if they’ll update Carhenge to include a corresponding bicyclehenge or something.

So it seems that the ancients were just henging their bets.
