I have an old G-3. it’s been sitting in a closet, unplugged, for a year. Now Hubby wants me to transfer what I want from it, basicly some photos.
I have The Missing Manual I think I understand the firewire transfer procedure, but I have a couple questions.
-
When I hooked them together, and started the G-3, I didn’t get any chimes. Is the battery the problem since it’s been unplugged so long? If so, am I screwed?
-
I don’t have a monitor for the G-3 doing the firewire hook up, I have no way of knowing when the connection is made, or do I?
Any other suggestions?
Best answer may be to open up the G3, extricate the hard drive and install the hard drive into the G5. Should be pretty easy to do. Then you’ll have 2 hard drives!
a G5 should be able to handle multiple hard drives no problem.
If you can get it to boot in target disk mode, I don’t see why it would need a monitor, and you’ll know it worked because the G3’s hard disk(s) will show up on your new computer’s Desktop as if they were external drives. Which in every way that matters, they are.
If you’re doing Firewire-based networking, with personal file sharing turned on and mounting the other computer’s volumes via “Connect to Server” and all that, different story entirely, for that you’d need to boot and you’d need a monitor (I don’t think a G3 will boot headless, at any rate)…but I don’t see any reason to do it that way. Just boot up in Target Disk Mode. ⌘-T right after you hit the power-on key.
If it does nothing at all, yeah, you need a PRAM battery replacement. Or just open up the computer, yank out the hard disk and put it into an external FireWire disk enclosure, if you’ve got one handy.
Sorry, I wasn’t clear. The G-5 is an iMac. No room for another hard drive.
Could my problem be that the G-3 has a much older OS? I believe it’s 10.2
I hooked up a monitor too. I’ve got chimes. but the G-3 just doesn’t show up on the G-5.
The G3 won’t boot into target mode, but the imac will. So since you have no monitor, that kinda bites. Even if you had the g5 tower, the drives are different,so ignore that suggestion. But, you can buy a fairly cheap ide drive firewire enclosure, yank the g3 drive, put it in the enclosure, wallah. Or borrow a monitor from someone.
NurseCarmen, I have a monitor, I was just being lazy. I hooked it up.
I’m so proud of myself
I used my husband’s flash drive. Everything is transferred!
Thanks for the answers. I’m glad I got everything I needed. Now, I have to clean it up so Hubby can give it to his friend.
Someone else’s problem!
