Another Merc Outboard Question

I was told by the mechanic at the dealer to disconnect the fuel line, hook up water, and then run the engine out until it dies before putting it away for the winter.

I did all that and 25 minutes later the engine was still running. I know it’s not running on oil because there is no smoke whatsoever. I eventually turned the thing off.

Can it really take a half an hour to run out an Optimax 90 HP engine with nothing connection to the fuel tank?

A bit of internet browsing indicates that your motor has something called a vapor separator tank. It looks like it’s a large-ish container in the two step fuel system. So if you were idling, it’s possible that yes, you could run a long time from what’s in that tank.

Then again, I’m not too familiar with anything but tiny two stroke outboards, so I could be completely wrong here.

It finally ran out… so never mind. All is good.
