I was trying to recall this one…it concerned a group of men (engineers) who had the task of building/maintaining some kind of structure on the Planets Jupiter. The structure was called “the bridge”-although it wasn’t really a bridge-it was some kind of a tall building/tower.
Anyway, the “bridge” was built of beams , composed of water ice-and the structure was constantly under attack by the Jovian atmosphere/winds. There were robotic machines that constantly repaired and rebuilt the bridge.
I just cannot recall who the author was, or the title. Does this ring a bell?
I haven’t read it for decades, but I believe the first volume of James Blish’s Cities in Flight series involved building a bridge on Jupiter. Wiki link. Does the description for “They Shall Have Stars” ring a bell?
Blish’s “Bridge” was originally published as a standalone short story (as was much of the “Cities in Flight”). It’s been anthologizedmany times.
I agree - this sounds a lot like Blish’s “Bridge.”
It was Blish…I just got the anthology …good read!
