sounds to me like a John Folgerber, Van Morrison, Steely Dan type tune. Can’t get this fragment out of my head until I hear the song again. Help please if you know this one!
I struggle every day to be the kind of person my dog thinks I am.
“Vanz Kant Danz”: John Fogerty from the Centerfield album.
Useless trivia - it was originally called “Zanz Kant Danz” after Saul Zaentz, the head of Fantasy Records (CCR’s label). Zaentz threatened to sue, hence the name change.
Thanks!
Someone told me a while ago that this song was about the band mgr. or whatever who screwed the band out of money, hence the song. Is this Zaentz the same guy?
Same guy. It’s an ugly story. CCR’s contract with Fantasy was, typically for the day, extremely unfavorable for the band and they didn’t make a lot of money off their very successful music. When they hit it big, Zaentz talked them into investing in some fly-by-night company that went under. After the band broke up Fogerty tried to get out of his contract and Fantasy refused, claiming he still owed them several albums. When he finally released Centerfield Fantasy sued him for plagiarism - for ripping off one of his own songs! (They own the rights to all the Fantasy material, which is why he never performs CCR songs in concert.) Fortunately, Fantasy lost the case.
Zaentz is better known as a film producer: The English Patient, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Amadeus and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest are all his. Sure sounds like a shmuck though.
