Another old dog

Don’t anybody listen to those smelly old dogs!
Why, if the price of gas weren’t so high, I’d drive on over and put the both of youse out of my misery!
(And thanks to Jodi who - BTW - was the first to use the term “smelly old dog” in this thread!)

Damn, my dog smells, and I only bathed her last year. You know how much shampoo costs? And water? Where’s my gun? Fuck, bullets cost a couple of cents each. I know I’ve got an axe or a baseball bat around here somewheres. Now hold still, Daisy…
Mmm, maybe I can use this pelt as a throw rug…

I feel for you - our beloved puppy has hip dysplasia - which has already cause us more hard decisions than I’d like to have had to make with a pet.

Is there any chance you could bring a puppy into the house with Daisy? While we may have obligations to our old pets (and I’m not a deep obligation to pets person), we bring pets into our lives intially because they bring us joy. Daisy is a loved obligation, but there isn’t a lot of joy for your family left in her. And perhaps Daisy herself would take some joy in a puppy.

We’ve thought about and discussed it, but don’t think so.
Daisy is quite the attention whore, and I think she’d resent any attention given to a pup.
Moreover, while she doesn’t dislike other dogs, she doesn’t really care too much for them either. Essentially tolerates them, so long as they don’t try to hump her or steal her food.

Au contraire. You in the OP: I’m not sure I want to keep spending a premium to keep a smelly old dog hanging around.

I’m not joining in the torch-and-pitchfork parade – she’s your dog, you have to decide what’s best for her and you and what you owe her, if anything – but the characterization was one that struck me as unkind (or perhaps just unconsidered) at the time, so I’d rather not take credit for it.

Best of luck with a tough decision, though.

No really, read it again, only quicker, and less carefully and I’m sure you’ll see I am correct. Here, I’ll do it for you…

Well I’ll be! :smack:

Hey, are you calling us bitches!?!?!?!

Hey, Good news everybody!
When we took Daisy in to have her ears done, they discovered she had lymphoma. So she’ll be dead in a few weeks to a couple of months. Damn, and I just bought a whole new bag of dog food… :frowning:

Yeah that is a heck of a update.

May Daisy go in Peace and loved.

Sorry to hear about your turmoil and the update Dinsdale. I do know exactly where you are coming from though.

Over the Christmas holidays our cat disappeared and four weeks later, just when I’d given her up for dead, she re-appeared with a very nasty wound that looked like she had been badly mauled by a dog or something. On the way to the vet, I was secretly praying that her injury was bad enough to have her put down because the thought of all the $$$ we’d need to fix her made my head spin.

Long story short, she was surgically fixed up and sent home with antibiotics for a mere $400  . She’s going to be fine now, and I’m pleased that I didn’t have to make that final decision. However, if she wanders again (and no, she is not a cat who will be kept indoors…she loves her backyard and sunshine too much, and no, I will not fork out hundreds or thousands for a cat-run) I will have her euthanased because another vet-bill llike that, and the misery she has had to endure during these weeks would be the straw.

I wish you and the family well, and hope that Daisy lives out her days reasonably comfortably.

Awwww, shit, Dinsdale. I’m so sorry. But now it’s just a matter of deciding when to put her down, rather than if you should put her down. Maybe that’ll make it easier. Probably not, though.

You will have more trouble getting rid of that dog food than you’d think.

I had to send my dog home last year. It hurts, but at least you know you’re doing the right thing. Pamper her a little, and see if she can last 'till Spring, and do that high-sniffing, prancing thing they do in early Spring. Dogs love Spring.

Then cuddle her up, scratch her under the chin, and kill her. Don’t wait for nature to take its messy and painful course.

Yeah, the vet says the surest sign would be a loss of appetite and a wasting away. Said we’d have to tempt her with her favorite foods. Well, this old dog doesn’t take too long to catch on. She’s been eating like a frigging horse, and successfully begging for all kids of treats!

Kinda fun spoiling the shit outta her, knowing it isn’t going to kill her!

Wierd, tho, when you think that you know she is dying, while she lacks any awareness of the fact. Meanwhile, the idiot flapped one of the darned stents out of her ears. What a maroon!

Dinsdale - I’m sorry. Life really sucks some times.

Dins, I’m so sorry for your loss.

Please give Daisy a hug from Baron and I…
