And I have to say it’s a bit of a relief. I actually got laid off 2 years ago, but have continued on as a freelancer here (design agency in LA area) since then. Company has struggled since before the time of my layoff, so in this economy it’s NO surprise that the big axe has fallen.
I should be more worried, but right now I feel like I can finally exhale.
Yeah. There are lots of small, struggling companies that really oughta be taken out back and put out of their misery. I have been consulting for one for several years now. They haven’t made payroll since August, they’ve been reported to the department of labor, and everyone except the C-level management has quit. They still won’t admit they’re out of business.
What kind of company was it? Did it fail because there was simply no demand for what it did, or was there plenty of demand but poor management?
I’m always hopeful that when struggling little companies finally expire, the brains of the outfit will strike out on their own and find a high-demand niche that they can fill in a way that’s both efficient and fun. That’s my great American fantasy.
Owner sold out to a manufacturing corporation. The guy at the corporation whose “baby” this creative division was going to be got canned within the first month after the sale. Since then we have been flailing like a drowning man, trying to “make the numbers” by totally different rules and under totally new and different expectations.
It was never going to work. Why they wasted all this time and money coming to that very obvious conclusion I will never know.
