Another penny question....

I hope it’s ok to post this on the “comments” board…

I have a tangential question to the “Do we still need pennies?” question I read today online. That is–

Are then any people–perhaps southern folks in particular–who refuse to use pennies because they have Abe Lincoln on them? In other words, they are still upset about “The War of Northern Aggresion” and protest it by not using a coin with Abe’s face on it.

just curious

If so, wouldn’t they also have a problem with the $5 bill?

Assuming your question to be serious, the answer is no.

The closest I’ve heard to that was from a recent article in the New Yorker about the Sons of Confederate Veterans. They were teed off after being kicked out of a mall, so they plotted their revenge:

Seems like that’s gotta be illegal.

A link to the column is appreciated. Does it make sense to keep minting pennies?

Welcome to the SDMB, and thank you for posting your comment.
Please include a link to Cecil’s column if it’s on the straight dope web site.
To include a link, it can be as simple as including the web page location in your post (make sure there is a space before and after the text of the URL).

Cecil’s column can be found on-line at the link provided by bibliophage.

IIRC, it’s not illegal.

Petty, perhaps. But not illegal.
