Another Round of Hamantaschen Baking For The Steinhardts

Latkes and hamantaschen are yummy, and there’s an ever-present temptation to eat too many of them. If you did that, you probably would get sick.

The traditional drinking on Purim might have something to do with getting sick on hamantaschen, too.

I love these annual posts of yours. It’s fun watching your family grow.

They’re getting bigger every minute, zev.

God’s blessings on them, and you.

Regards,
Shodan

Latketashen?

Hamenlatkes?

I like Latketashen. See, you take some flour and some water. No wait, that’s matzohs. Hmm. You take some flour and some water and some excellent peach jam that Bubby makes every summertime, because her arthritis is just a bit too much any more for her to squeeze the cheesecloth and make jelly so what’s not to like anyway?

Then you shred some onions and whip a few eggs. Take the onions and put them in with the peach jam. Set it aside to “age”. Take the eggs and fold them into the flour and water. Mix by hand, allowing the kids to squeeze the dough. Must be the exact consistency of Play Doh.

Press tasty dough through collander holes, creating dough “pasta”. Form into doughey latkes. Sprinkle on onion/jam flavoring. Deep fry.

See? Easy peasey. ;j

zev, beautiful kids, beautiful tradition. Thank you so much for sharing.

Zev, I didn’t notice… are there cupboard doors yet?

The kids are getting so big. Nice to see they’re all growing and are healthy and happy.

So what did you fill them with, Zev? Poppy?

Poppy’s great, but my wife’s bored with it. Last year she tried this orange-zest thing, which was good, and yesterday she made a date-paste and halva mixture, which was even better. She also let me fill a few with my mom’s old recipe - strawberry jam and granola.

You guys really have a great time being Jews. I love that!

Gosh your kids have grown so much!
Avraham looks like his mum and Tzivya and Chaim look just like you, Zev!

I love these threads, so nice to see kids having such fun.

I had latkes for dinner last night (picked up at the local market- we needed a quick dinner so we could get to the megillah reading at 8). After we got home from the megillah reading, we had hamantaschen (also picked up from the market). So I got to have both in one day! ;j

Just wanted to tell you that you inspired me to bake some hamentaschen this year! I dont have any Jewish friends to share them with but I know lots of goys that like cookies.

In fact I found a recipe in my “Love & Knishes” cookbook for "cookie-dough hamentaschen. " Instead of the traditional hamentaschen, you use a dough that is more like an icebox sugar cookie. I am sooo excited to see how they turn out, the dough is chilling in the fridge right now. Now if only I could figure out how to convert my baker’s marzipan into filling… it is far too stiff in its packaged state.

I’ve used premade sugar-cookie dough to make hamantaschen (dough that you have to roll out doesn’t like me). They weren’t very authentic, but they were good. When I did that, I used strawberry or apricot jam as a filling. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a marzipan-filled hamantasch.

Then I am an evil genius!!!

Actually, I think “almond” is a not-uncommon filling, and marzipan is just almond paste with more sugar added. I was thinking of mixing the marzipan I have with cream cheese and slivered almonds for a new taste sensation. I have homemade blueberry jam I intend to use as well.

As you see I’m not much of a traditionalist when it comes to hamentaschen. This is what comes of raising your children as free spirits. I can’t stand poppyseed filling. My poor mother.

 You should send your poppyseed hamantaschen to me. That’s the best kind!

Darn. There aren’t any neat lapsed Lutheran foods.

Uh, Happy Purim, if that’s the appropriate thing to say.

(Note to self: Gotta get to the deli again soon.)

It makes up for battling total extermination for 5,500 + years !

:dubious:

Zev, did anybody dress up this year? I remember a UPS man and bride from last year.

I wore pale blue clothes with large bunches of cotton balls pasted on, and carried a water gun. When people asked, “Clouds?” or something like that, I got to squirt them, and tell them, “Partly cloudy with a chance of showers.”
