Another Shorpy analysis thread

This would be a fun post for those trying to ID old cars, but what’s up with that wall on the right hand side? It appears to be a building that’s barely wide enough to accommodate its chimneys. The ghosts of old buildings are always kinda poignant.

It looks like there’s a 2-story building extending off to the right for the first third of the wall, as well as some lighter-colored bricks on this side of the wall, indicating that a building may have been removed on this side to make room for a parking lot. Not sure how that affects why the wall (particularly, a wall that high) goes back that far, and why it has chimneys in it… I also notice that there’s a covered walkway at the end of the wall, extending out into the alley by the telephone pole. Perhaps a covered entrance for people arriving in the rain or snow? Still doesn’t explain why it’s that tall…

I think there’s also some kind of forced perspective making the wall look narrower than it is–I think it’s higher on this side than the other, as there’s a triangular roof-thing about halfway back, like you’d put over a staircase or maybe a skylight, so the wall might be 10’ thick or so.

Also, I would love to have any of the three cars in the lower right corner–the station wagon, the convertible, or the taxi.

I want the little black coupe, lower left. Reminds me of Eddie Valiant’s car.

The convertible all the way to the right on the lower corner would be the one for me.
