Another song ID. Possibly 80s?

I’m not a big Billy Squire fan, I never would have figured that out. After I listed to that .wav file I went off in way the wrong direction. Dammit, I still going to find the song it reminds me of…

Cheers. One of the few recordings of me playing guitar. I’m a keyboardist, and this was way back in 2001 when I was screwing around at a friend’s place (cat sitting), and recorded a sketch with a couple different guitars, bass, and tapping the pads on some Alesis drum module. I heard the Billy Squire song years later and was like, wait a second! Did I subconsciously ripoff Billy Squire? Rocket from the Crypt was my immediate inspiration, I will admit.

BTW, love the connection to “I Will Follow Him.” It never would have occurred to me, but, yeah, there’s a definite similarity there, too.

Nevermind, I’d swear it reminded me of a Smashing Pumpkin’s song. Despite the fun I just had reliving my high school days in 30 second youtube clips (I did love Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness), as it turns out, that .wav file sounds nothing like anything I could find (quickly anyways) that Billy Corgan ever recorded for the Pumpkins.

I’m a big Pumpkins fan, so it’s possible that was invading my subconscious. (Actually, the little acoustic-electric guitar arpeggio at the end of the sketch was inspired by “I am One,” if I remember correctly. Actually, now that I think of it, the “I Am One” chord progression is similar, too, and in the same key, though a lot faster with a different rhythm.)

Jellybelly was the song I was thinking of.
Doesn’t really sound like it, but I haven’t heard it in 15 years.

This isn’t it (can’t be, you would know it for sure), but that sounds an awful lot like “You Really Got Me” by the Kinks. Van Halen did a cover, but I don’t think that’s the synth pop sound you’re looking for. Unfortunately, that’s the only thing close that’s stuck in my head right now so I can’t think of anything else!

Funny. That’s like one of my favorite Pumpkins songs. It was the first song I thought of, too, when you mentioned the Pumpkins connection, but it doesn’t have anything to do with that song.

Oh, we’ve gotten a winner already. It was the Billy Squier (kept misspelling it before) song “Everybody Wants You.” “You Really Got Me” does have some similar elements with the bVII - I progression it’s got going on. But not quite it. That bIII is missing.

Haha, or it’s that Billy Squire song. Left the preview window open way too long without refreshing. Got a little distracted.

I thought Billy Squire was pretty fucking annoying in the 1980s, much to the dismay of my contemporaries.

When the 1990s rolled around and Beavis and Butthead throughly eviscerated him in numerous video commentaries, I felt a sense of vindication that has been all too rare in my life.

I’ve had The Stroke stuck in my head since yesterday, thanks guys.
