Another tipping thread. This time - the sushi bar.

But (hopefully) not a debate, just a genuine question this time. Prompted by dinner last night…

I understand at a sushi bar one is supposed to tip the sushi chef and leave something for the (generally) waitress who brings the drinks, miso soup, etc. But what is the convention?
Last night I tipped the sushi chef about 20% (especially because he made some “extra” hand rolls for us) and left a couple dollars for the waitress (didn’t have any drinks other than tea, so there wasn’t much for her to do). However, I wasn’t sure this was appropriate or not.

So, what is the convention, at least here in the USA?

(And if this is more appropriate to IMHO, mods, feel free to do your thing and move it. Thanks.)

Sorry, but for an Aussie in Japan, the whole idea of tipping a sushi chef seems extremely silly!

But you are talking about the US, so carry on.

Actually here we have whats known as "monogolian bbq "

Its basically a fill it your self bowl with meats noodles and vegetables like a salad bar but that they stir fry

At the buffet places I go to its cooked seperatly and the chef has a tip jar out … i wondered if he should be tipped or no …

I dunno about the sushi chef (yuk!) but when I go to Mongolian BBQ, I usually tip the chef $1 for both me and my wife, then tip the waiter 10%, seeing as he/she only brings drinks. Cheap? maybe, but I hardly see the point of tipping when you’re getting your own food.

“I hardly see the point of tipping when you’re getting your own food.”

Yes, I thought about that but then I remembered that the waitress has to pay rent too.

Who gets your drinks?
