I saw this one about ten years ago. Middle of the night, kids need to be fed, turn on a spy movie set in Sophia, Bulgaria (I think) in the early forties. Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre were pretty much the leads, maybe cashing in on “Casablanca.” And it was pretty good, so I want to see all of it.
They made several movies together, but I can’t find this one in my references.
I’ll take a guess, was it The Conspirators? There’s a plot synopsis at imdb.com.
That’s a maybe, but I could swear it was in central Yurp some place. As I recall, Greenstreet and Lorre were spying for different countries, but still gracious.
Of course, I could have hallucinated it.
What you’re remembering is clearly not Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, In This Our Life_, or Hollywood Canteen. There are some resemblances between your description and each of the other four movies that bibliophage has listed, although none quite fits.
Alas, it is far easier to misremember crucial details from movies that you haven’t seen for years than you might think. I know that I’ve done that.
It would be “Background to Danger.” Turkey, Bulgaria, what’s the difference?
Thanks!
That just reminded me of a sleepy little wartime flick that reunited Greenstreet, Mary Astor, Bogie, and director Huston of “Falcon” fame. It was called “Across the Pacific” although the film is actually about crossing the Isthmus of Panama on a Japanese cruise ship. Pretty good, if only for the personalities involved. Peter Lorre unfortunately didn’t show up in that one.
