Another vista to w10 question

I have Vista on my desktop ((32-bit SP2). My understanding is that MS will stop supporting it in April, 2017. At present, the only protection I use on this computer is the one provided when I bought it - no Norton, MacAfee, etc.

I am quite happy with Vista (I know, I know - drop ordure on me from a great height - but move on); I update as they come in. No problems.

My question is - if I install Norton or ? prior to when MS no longer supports Vista - will my comp be secure? In other words; if comp no longer receives WS updates, will installation of Norton, etc. keep it safe?

On a not unrelated note; my laptop is W7 - I have been holding off update to 10 until bugs have been resolved. When do you savvy Dopers think that may be?

Any informed response is most welcome. Or snark. Funny snark is cool, too.

I don’t know about Vista, but I updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and just found out there is no DVD player function, and the download for a Windows media player costs $15–if you can figure out how to do it online!
