I don’t know, maybe Jerry Seinfeld, Steve Jobs, Teri Hatcher, and Wentworth Miller have all suffered from being non-White. More likely, I don’t think many people have assumed they’re Arab or Syrian because they don’t fit a caricature of what “Arabs” look like. Having lived in this country all my life, I’m guessing most people assume they’re White. They are also all of Syrian background.

Are they Muslim immigrants with a name like " Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa?" The argument that he, specifically, “passed as white” is obviously ludicrous and a world away from Mitch Daniels but that won’t stop people from making it, apparently.

And the lesson is the same thing every reasonable person without an axe to grind always posts as their first response to any emotionally charged news incident, especially mass shootings:

*Assume everything that comes out in the first 24 hours is wrong, because it will always turn out to be based on national reporters transmitting what local reporters heard from a random person on the Internet who pulled it out of his ass.
*Trust nothing without a source.
*Make no conclusions about the incident or its meaning until the dust settles and cooler-headed information is available.

If people would finally learn this, we might actually get a meaningful positive out of this incident. Instead we’re looking at magical Arabs whose “whiteness” turns on and off based on how we want to use them in our pre-determined narratives.

I fully agree that it can be useful to discuss the political implications of the shooter’s motives – e.g., targeting the vaccination line.

And remember, just because he did no such thing as “target the vaccination line” doesn’t mean we can’t attribute all sorts of “motives and implications” to it, just like the fact that he isn’t white won’t stop us from talking about the political meaning of “another white male perpetrating a mass shooting.”

So we need to have these whackjobs’ motives 100% verified before we can discuss their potential political implications? It’s a chatroom conversation, not a policy-making debate or a jury trial.

While the people making 911 calls from inside the store might have been a random selection, they were all identifying the shooter as white when they mentioned his appearance at all.

The police radio communication was also saying “white male”.

So no, this wasn’t a matter of “media bias”. It was a matter of how his appearance slotted into US racial categories.

My source was

1. People on site in the store being shot at
2. Police descriptions
3. The picture of him being led away, in which he did look like a white man to me, rather than some other category.

As I pointed out: everyone identified this man as “white” until his name was announced. Then watch everyone who said “oh, I knew all along!”. I have no doubt this man has suffered for his ancestry and religion, but that because of people who knew his background, not due to his appearance.

That actually IS the reality for light-skinned Arabs in the US. Their place in the hierarchy isn’t clear cut and moves around, often in service to the needs/desires/bias of other people, without consulting said Arabs.

It has always been a problem for the racists that there are so many people who don’t neatly fit the categories.
