“Hot Rod Lincoln,” a big hit for Commander Cody in 1970, was originally an answer song to “Hot Rod Race.” Both songs were sung by Arkie Shibley, and “Lincoln” was written by Charlie Ryan, who had covered “Race” at some earlier point; both were from the early 1950s. “Hot Rod Race” ended with a rickety Lincoln stealing the race between a Ford and a Mercury, and “Hot Rod Lincoln” re-told the story from the Lincoln driver’s POV.
“Mother Popcorn” by James Brown spawned an answer song: Vicki Anderson recorded “Answer to Mother Popcorn (I Got a Mother for You).” Both songs were released in 1969.
Country music clowns Mo Bandy and Joe Stampley recorded “Where’s the Dress” in reply to Culture Club’s “Karma Chameleon.” Possibly more of a parody.
I came in here to post “It Wasn’t God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels,” but I see I was beaten to it.
However, I remembered that there was an answer to Hank Locklin’s “Please Help Me, I’m Falling,” called “(I Can’t Help You) I’m Falling Too,” by Skeeter Davis.
Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart” was an answer to The Captain and Tenille’s “Love Will Keep Us Together.”
Nellie McKay’s whole album “Get Away From Me” was an answer to former classmate Norah Jones’s “Come Away With Me.” Funny how Nellie is always defined by other people: Eminem with a uterus, Norah Jones with a mean streak, Doris Day with a nasty speed habit… (I’m sure she doesn’t really have a nasty speed habit.)
