Anti-gay pol dies

Hold on there, Jackson, I’m a gay person who is most defintely not defined by my orientation.

I’m a weight-lifter.

A Scrabble player.

A Terry Pratchett fan.

A classic film watcher.

I like the poems of TS Eliot, the sound of rain on roofs, drinking microbrew beer, debating politics–all of these are important parts of my being, and reducing me and other gay people to nothing more than our sexual orientation is a ridiculous overstatement.

If being gay is your only defining trait, well, that’s sad for you, but leave the rest of us out of that very limiting description.

Dude, as one gay guy to another, you’re fucking insane.

Anyone who opposes equality for gays is trash. Scum. Bigotted to the core of their being, incapable of goodness or decency. They are no different than klansmen, no different than those bastards who tried to block school integration or black voting. They are evil to tehir core, just like all those before them who have opposed equality.

Oh, so he really believed it, huh? Oh. Wow. Well then. If he really believed it, if it were a conviction from his bullshit god, then golly, why don’t I just lie down and gleefully let him trample all over me.

Oh. Wait. No. That’s bullshit. Hitler, to risk invoking Godwin, operated from a “strongly held conviction.” Just because someone has a “strongly held conviction,” just because their idiotic religious gurus tell them something, DOES NOT MAKE IT OKAY. Evil is evil is evil. Opposing equality is evil. Period. End of sentence, no discussion. And all those who oppose equality are evil.

Not that I expect a self-serving piece of shit like you to agree. You don’t give a flying fuck about America’s oppressed.

There is nothing inhumane in celebrating the passage into hell of a terrible person. Hitler, Stalin, Hussein, Thurmond, this jackass and all who are like him. Dancing on their graves is too fucking good for them.

Count me among those who think a death is nothing to celebrate.

Count me, also, among those who don’t think there is any one “defining issue” which brands someone as irretrievably evil. In fact, count me as someone who doesn’t believe anyone, however vile their behaviour, is irretrievably evil. We are all, as gobear points out, many things, some good, some bad.

The fact that Mr. Knight did evil during his lifetime is not something to celebrate; neither is the fact that he can no longer choose to undo the harm he’s done. Like someone said earlier: if he’d changed his mind, that would be something to celebrate. Death isn’t.

…and these are the kinds of people who decry Bush’s conviction that he is doing God’s work. Those who think that his strong belief that terrorists are evil and that he is working on the side of Good.

And spectrum , you bigoted piece of “trash” and “scum”, when Ted Kennedy and John Kerry die, I expect you sit sit on the sidelines quietly while the Conservative Legions of Doom dance on their graves and toast their deaths.

Crazy libs.

When did you turn gay, Mr. Phelps?

Regards,
Shodan

“Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)”-Walt Whitman, “Song of Myself”

I would argue their position, but not their action.

Spectrum, gotta tell you, you’re way out of line.

If the civil rights movement taught us anything, it is that most people with racist beliefs aren’t “trash,” “scum,” or “evil to the core of their being.” Mostly they were average people, who loved their families, and genuinely tried to do the right thing every day. They just happened to have some beliefs that we now know to be incorrect ones.

The average racist person isn’t Adolf Hitler. He’s more akin to Archie Bunker. And the Archie Bunkers of the world can be redeemed.

There’s a similar distinction to be made among people who are genuinely, virulently anti-gay and people who have issues with certain aspects of political implementation of some programs. I favor, for instance, civil unions but not gay marriage, in part because of the recognition that social conservatism in most of the country would make full gay marriage nearly impossible to pass.

I think this distinction would be lost on you, and that’s a shame. Because by that standard, you’re living in the most intolerant country in the world, rather than one of the more enlightened. And it’s a damn miracle that Queer Eye and Will and Grace ever got on the air.

Faith may not be a choice, but how one chooses to express that faith most definitely is. The ugliness and hate that conservative Christians find in the Bible comes from them, not from Jesus.

Bullshit. This is a flat out lie, they may believe the lie themselves but it is still a lie. You cannot claim to not hate people while treating them as second class citizens.

Yes, because gays have to be perfect to be worthy of equality.
You judgmental fucks make me sick. I hope Knight managed to find some peace before he died, even if it was to late to make up for the evil he perpetrated while alive, but I’m not going to judge others for their reaction.
I see people excusing the evil actions of this man while spitting on the victims of his actions.

Then you’re a sick idiot. Everyone here knows that I support gay marriage (as a review of my posts will show), and I have advised my Congressional representative of that fact. I’m not even talking about gay marriage in this thread, and the fact that you don’t know that means you’re not listening. It so happens that I can BOTH support gay marriage AND oppose wishing death on people who don’t. Jackass.

Not to be a pest, but as a San Franciscan and as someone who’s proud of Newsom’s steps to ensure rights for his citizens, do you have a cite for this?

Yes, but once they do, they stop being funny and their shows get cancelled.

No tears shed here.

Esprix

I don’t see Tobio wishing death on anyone, just refusing to mourn or feel any regret at a particular death. Perhaps it is you who should listen more.

Pete Knight wished harm to me and people like me. In fact, he didn’t just wish, he acted. Now he is dead. Like I said, I feel bad that his survivors will never have the chance to reconcile with him, but I am glad he’s gone. I don’t shed tears for people who hate me.

And that has what to do with what I said? When did I say that Tobio wished death on someone? The correct answer is never. It so happens that I can simultaneously support gay marriage, oppose wishing death upon people, AND respond to people who call me a judgmental fuck for no good reason.

People like you? What does that mean? Gay people are not the Borg, are they? Did you know that there exist gay people who oppose gay marriage? Aren’t you the one who just said that sexual orientation does not define a person? I support gay marriage, so he wished harm on me too. I’d like for my daughter to have that option available to her if she wants it. I’m not your enemy, Gobear, despite that you’ve long ago apparently made up your mind to the contrary.

(Heh. He called him a fucking simpleton. Heh.)

But you said, “It so happens that I can BOTH support gay marriage AND oppose wishing death on people who don’t.” Pretty much reads like you’re accusing him of wishing death on people. don’t get indignant when people read what you write as if you meant it.

Knight’s enmity was not based on support for gay marriage but on being gay. in that respect, he was gunning for me and, yes, people like me. Obviously, we aren’t the Borg, but gay people do have at least one trait in common–we sleep with our own gender.

Dude, dial down the paranoia. I am not your enemy. Doesn’t mean I won’t set you, ahem, straight if I think you’re in error.

Would you prefer I say nothing and seethe silently to myself instead, leaving you to think your words have complete uncritical support?

Actually, he didn’t, because as I noted I did not make the equivelance he claims only a simpleton would make.

Jeebus! Didja see that the bastard’s a legend in aerospace circles?

You’d think a guy like that would be above the whole gay marriage debate. To be a test pilot, he had to have been well educated, and yet he apparently clung tenaciously to a misguided idea. What a waste.

Criminey. I am sick and tired of this bullshit.

I support full civil unions for gay couples. This is a position that makes me, by the standards of the gay lobby, far more progressive than the general population. Yet it is a position that gets me called a bigot on this board.

Just because I don’t support gay marriage.

Now, I’m a reasonable guy, and I like to talk with anybody. But if I were in elected office, I wouldn’t want to cut a deal with anybody directing hateful personal insults my way.

I sure as hell wouldn’t be negotiating with assholes like otto and Spectrum.

And I’ll come right out and say it. Pete Stark went too far in his opposition to gay marriage. But, with the lines drawn the way they are in California, any opposition would get him called a bigot.

As I’m finding out here.

Pete Stark made genuine and lasting contributions to his nation’s lasting security and peace. I thank him for his years of military service and devotion to duty.
