antibiotics allergy question

So my wife is allergic to sulfa based (as well as most other) antibiotics. Guess what my doc gave me for an infection…

Now she won’t even share a drink with me lest some small bit of my saliva kill her.

Is it even possible for my saliva (or other bodily fluids winkwinknudgenudge) to affect her allergies while I am taking something that she is allergic to? I’m not talking about residue from the pill. Say I take the pill, then eat and brush my teeth. Is my saliva still a danger to her?

How long after my last dose will it take for my body to be antibiotic free?

I am allergic to sulfa drugs as well, my SO has taken them in the past and I’ve never had a problem. I’m not sure how severe her allergy is though.

Depends on a couple things, like how bad her allergies are, and exactly which drug you were prescribed. I am not aware of any sulfa drug that is excreted in your saliva. Most sulfa drugs are metabolized and the metabolites are then excreted in your urine and/or feces. Most likely normal contact won’t cause her any problems, now the residue from the pills themselves could cause problems. If her allergy is really bad (aka life threatening), I would say the best thing you can do is wash your hands after handling the pills and rinse your mouth out with water after taking them.

Now, I am not a doctor, or a pharmacist (yet), so this isn’t medical advise.

For an anecdote, my wife is allergic to Sulfa based drugs also, and she has never had trouble from kissing me, touching me, or even shaking hands with me when I had a lot of tablet residue on my hands (way more then you would have from just taking the pills). But then she doesn’t have a life threatening allergy, when she’s taken them she just breaks out all over with REALLY itchy hives.

She hasn’t used any sulfa drugs in a long time. Not since she was a little kid at least. She said she remembers swelling up, so not a good thing.

Thanks for the info.
