Antikytherian shipwreck dived. New finds.

Didn’t see this posted yet: http://www.pasthorizonspr.com/index.php/archives/10/2014/2000-year-old-antikythera-ship-much-larger-than-previously-thought

Divers are exploring the wreck that produced the Antikytherian device. They are turning up some surprising things including the discovery that it is the largest shipwreck of ancient times. Cool stuff.

I read about that a couple days ago. Even if they don’t find any other devices, it’s still very exciting.

Cool, thanks for linking to the news.

And for no other reason then because we"re talking about under water sculptures, here is how cancuns statues are doing, after close to eigt years under the sea now. Just beautiful. http://www.underwatersculpture.com

The Antikythera device should never have been removed from the site. Now the place is overrun with kytheras.

Cool, maybe they finally find that darned wind up key!

Wow! A double-post with an eight hour delay. How did that happen?

The official site of the dive: http://antikythera.whoi.edu/

And the official research site of the Antikythera device itself: http://www.antikythera-mechanism.gr/

I’m hoping for an ancient iPad or Kindle, complete with an e-scroll of Aristotle’s Poetics, part 2, on comedy.

There are four or five wonderful photos there; I’m going to update my screen saver images.

Very cool indeed. If the dive site is such a tricky one then one would think that everything on the ship is likely to still be there. And personally I’d think it unlikely to be just carrying the device as a one off.

They already found way more than that back in 1900. Have a look at the bronze and marble statues on this page.

This ship *was *special. It was very large for the time and was like a traveling art exhibition.

Yeah, I wonder if it was part of some kings treasure trove being transported to the summer house on an island.

A traveling World’s Fair.

Wow, thanks for that, some wonderful stuff there. The quality of the marble hands from the statues are exquisite. Exciting to think of what else might yet be found

That’s one of the first thing I wondered about when I read that article. Just what were all those cool things doing on one boat? If the captain didn’t die in the wreck I bet he had a lot of explaining to do.

Just imagine the sense of loss those responsible for that treasure trove must have felt when the ship sank! What’s worse is that there were probably survivors and they probably knew exactly where the wreckage was, but they had no possible way of recovering it.

Just wait until they find Mr. Data’s head!

It’s long been believed to have been a ship of luxury goods being taken from somewhere in the Greek islands to Rome. They lifted four big horse statues from the site back when it was first found. It may hold some unbelievable treasures, including companions to the Mechanism that can be better preserved this time.
