Trying to actually match up cities or towns of any noticeable size, the best I’ve come up with is:
Cordova Spain with Hamilton New Zealand
(depending on whether or not either of those cities sprawls out into suburbs)
Honolulu puts you on the outskirts of Ghanzi Botswana
(though I suspect Ghanzi Botswana may not have any outskirts)
Bogota nearly gets you to Jakarta (does Gedung Meneng count as a “city or town of noticeable size?”)
We are planning a European tour sometime before moving back to NZ from the UK. I want to divert deep into Southern Spain, just so I can visit my natal antipode.
That way, I can always win the “furthest from where you were born” contests (and I usually do pretty well anyhow, but I want the edge, without strapping myself to a retired ICBM).
Wow, it’s amazing how little overlap there is when looking at that map. Some overlap with China/Southeast Asia and South America, but it almost looks like the land masses are arranged to avoid antipodal juxtaposition, (band name). Look how nicely Australia nestles into the North Atlantic and how the edge of Antarctic skirts the edge of Russia.
I was pretty young when I realized that China was a poor approximation to opposite the US, and started digging my hole in the backyard to Australia, instead. Which still isn’t right, of course, but it’s closer.
