I’m making an effort to lose some weight and get in shape, and I thought it would be a good idea to figure out my ideal weight range so I can set a specific goal. (This doesn’t count as asking for medical advice, right? Since I’m not sick or anthing, just a bit heavy.)
I’ve googled a few calculators online, and so far I’ve gotten results ranging from 99lbs (yeah, no fucking way) to 163lbs (which is about where I’m at now, and I know I’m overweight). I know ideal weight is supposed to be a range, but that’s a 64 pound range, and I was hoping to narrow it down a bit more than that.
I figure there are at least a few folks here on the Dope that are knowledgable about such things. Can anyone point me to a calculator that’s at least somewhat reliable? Failing that, does anyone know the actual formula for calculating your ideal weight so I can figure it out myself?
Problem: It is based on opinion. My ideal weight is often listed as 160-165 lbs. I am 5’ 10" and 185, and at 175 I have six-pack abs and am around 14% body fat, which is great. To get to 165, I need to get below 10% body fat, because I am fairly muscular and weight train. That’s extreme.
I would say that you should find out your ideal** body fat percentage** and get that measured. Body fat is usually the culprit when it comes to health and health indicators.
Aside from that, the SDMB might be a good place if the health nuts chime in.
Provide your age, height, sex and anything else that might help us. I am guessing you are around 5’ 3" and female, under 30 years old???
Yep. I’m 5’ 2", female, and 29 years old. I already eat fairly healthy as far as the type of food I eat (not much of a sweet tooth, not fond of greasy food), but I tend to eat too much (I eat until I’m stuffed, instead of just until I’m not hungry anymore). I’m also spend almost all of my free time reading or playing video games, and I work a desk job, so no exercise. So first order of business is to get off my ass and do something active at least a few times a week, and not eat so much. I suprised myself last night by eating about half the amount I usually eat for dinner. Once I gave my food a chance to digest, I was actually not hungry at all. Which shows just how much I’ve been overeating.
I’ll look into the body fat percentage thing, and check out the links posted so far. Thanks!
