Any advice/anecdotes about online PhD programs?

I have a friend who has decided to pull out of her current Masters program at a small private college and pursue a PhD in a related field (ideally being able to transfer as many of her credits as possible). For matters of time, money, and convenience, an online program would work best for her. I am asking on her behald if anyone here has any experience, first-hand knowledge, or stories about the following institutions, and any general advice about online degrees.

Fielding Graduate University

Capella University

Northcentral University

I’m in a mostly-online Masters program myself, but I just happen to be a distance-learning student enrolled in a large state university. On the other hand, these three schools have programs and options that interested her, but they are largely unknown commodities. I’d appreciate any Doper insights! Thank you in advance.

I don’t know anything particular about those three programs, but I have a couple of second-hand points about online PhD programs:

(1) Make sure the program carries the requisite certification / accreditation so that you will be able to become certified / licensed in your particular state. State requirements vary - so check them carefully.

(2) Online PhD programs require a lot more work than most people realize, and often require quite a bit of travel - for example, to do things like defend your dissertation.

Like I said, that’s all second-hand, but I think it’s sound advice nonetheless. I would investigate the actual program in great depth before committing.

What sort of work is she hoping to get afterwards? Those all look a bit. . . I did my PhD in SB and I’ve never HEARD of Fielding. Does she want a “PhD” or one actually worth something? At that point a school’s reputation means a lot. If she’s willing to go to one of these places, why is she bothering? Not being snarky, but if she’s serious she needs to be serious.
