Any advice for quickly finding an apartment in Manhattan?

On my recent trip to NY, I was fortunate enough to attain a full-time job in Manhattan. I’ll have about a week between jobs, and I’d like to find my apartment within that period.

My plan is to fly in, rent a sublet or hotel room, and hit the streets with a laptop pointed at Craigslist.

So, what are my chances of success if I avoid brokers at all costs? I’m sure a broker would help me find an apartment, but I’d rather spend his/her expensive fee on, say, some furniture.

Also, do I need to run around with a copy of my job offer to prove I can afford an apartment? What else do I need?

I’ve done some homework, obviously, but will take all the advice I can get!

Incidentally, I’m working near Lincoln Center, but am probably priced out of that area. I’m looking to spend (squeamish Dopers please look away) $1400-$1800 on a studio. Prefer to be near the Park, but will probably settle for anything near a subway that will get me there in a couple transfers.
