(or, I’m Bored At Work)
I was just curious to find out how many Afrikaans speaking Dopers are among us.
I’m married to a Afrikaans-speaking South African. Up until the beginning of this month, he was still living in South Africa. Now he’s working and living in Egypt until the day that he finally comes here (no idea yet when that will be).
I last visited South Africa in February, and was amazed at the sheer shock the people there displayed to have “discovered” an Afrikaans-speaking American. At Karaoke night*, I played on this “power” somewhat and spoke Afrikaans for the audience - I was an instant success.
It’s an amazing language, one that I have truly enjoyed learning, and am always looking to grow stronger in. But I can’t believe that Afrikaans-speaking Americans are really all that rare?
So, step up!
I dunno, maybe this belongs in IMHO?
*For those of you who have followed some of my other posts, and know that I am “horrendously shy”, I definitely took advantage of the liquid courage afforded by the generous barman, and the fact that I was in another country where no one (well, almost no one) would ever see me again.
