Any Apolitical Dopers?

This is perhaps “skeptical” more than “don’t give a crap”, but the older I get the more I think it is impossible for any one person to understand all this stuff. Nobody understands economics, for example, except maybe, maybe, a few academics (and certainly not all of them, because they contradict each other). Likewise for finance and other aspects of policy. Anyone who thinks they undersand how it all works is deluding themselves. I think most people’s political opinions, includind mine, are based on hunch, prejudice, and arbitrary assumptions. For that reason, I don’t hold those opinions very strongly.

I’m nearly the exact opposite, and apolitical. I enjoy talking about political issues with people (on-line and in person), but it’s at about the same level I enjoy talking about the weather, or sharing recipes, or discussing Shakespeare’s plays. It’s a topic of conversation, and that’s it. Like other posters have said, I don’t feel like I really have any power to change anything, and I feel like the whole political sphere is one huge performance art piece anyhow. I may add my name to your online petition to save Title X funding for Planned Parenthood, but I don’t honestly think we’re going to make a whit of difference in the actual decision making.

I did vote once, for Obama. I’ve never voted before or since, because I refuse to vote for the lesser of two evils, and no one else has ever inspired me as a person whose ideas I want to vote for, instead of against.
