Any chicken experts here? New chick help needed

Hello Everyone,
We’ve had chickens for quite some time now and have had many successful hatchings. We’ve always known a hatchling was on its way and made sure we’ve had plenty of chick starter foods on hand.

After reaching out limit on be chickens we’ve been collecting the eggs daily for a few months now. Imagine our surprise when we went out to the pen this evening and there’s a cute little freshly hatched chick staring at us! One of the females must have hidden an egg on us.

The problem is, since we weren’t expecting a new chick we have no starter food handy. At this time of night the feed stores are closed. We can’t say when the little guy/gal was born, but I’m sure it’s hungry. We’re not worried about grit as there’s sand available, but is there anything we can feed the chick this evening to get it through until we can get to the feed store tomorrow?

Chicks don’t need food for a couple three days after hatching – that’s how hatcheries can ship them at one day old. Grind up some lay pellets and add a bit of egg yolk, is what I would do.

Gallus gallus domesticus survived for millennia before humans started feeding their chickens starter pellets.

Whatever you are feeding the adult birds (maybe crush the kibbles) will work fine for until you can restock.
