Another Flewelling fan. I’ve had Oracle’s Queen for a few weeks now, but I haven’t touched it. The…what?..3 or 4 year wait was way too bloody long, and I find I just don’t care about the characters anymore. I’ve been re-reading Traitor’s Moon at work on my lunch, and the characters are just so much more endearing.
Then again, for a lot of people, Lynn Flewelling books go like this:
Come for the gay, stay for the Aurenfaie and gender-bending. Except, you know, in Oracle’s Queen the whole gender-bending thing becomes a bit irrelevant, and it just becomes a book about a battle for the throne, which isn’t Flewelling’s speciality. She’s an average fantasy writer, it’s just that she isn’t afraid to embrace bisexuality, homosexuality and gender-bending.
Well, okay. I also want to smack Ki around because I can’t stand him.
I do understand wanting to smack, though. You are Kushiel, after all.
I objected to the fee at librarything, too. I’m cheap, and I need to be very hooked before I’ll pay.

Shhh. I’m harboring a secret hope that Tamir marries her royal cousin instead. Ki is your typical scruffy urchin kid that grows up to wheedle his way into nobility through who he meets. It’s the Aladdin syndrome, and I hate it. Same reason I don’t like Hyacinthe. Yes, gasp, I know, people just can’t comprehend the fact there are people who don’t like Hyacinthe. I like him better when he grows up and has to mature due to his role in the books, but the Prince of Travellers schtick ain’t my thing.
I want to see a good, epic fantasy series where the main character is already in the line of succession but has to go through some adversity to get on the throne, but without the assistance of some poor commoner who would normally never get a second glance from nobility.
There’s a new neat feature on the site. You can get a special Chain Reading bookmarklet . Then, if you’re on a site like Amazon and you see a book you like, you can click on the bookmark and it will take you to the book’s page on CR, so you can drop it into your planned reading list. It is supposed to work on any page where the book’s ISBN is displayed.
It’s a neat feature for someone like me who is always seeing books to read and never making note of them! It works on Epinions, too.
Ooo, this is really neat. I just signed up (under MsMcKnittington) and I’m busily adding all my favorite books. Maybe I’ll get around to writing reviews–who knows. I always welcome suggestions, though. Dopers have never failed me before when it comes to book suggestions.
Has anyone tried to access Chain Reading lately? I’m getting error messages. I’m not web-savvy enough to know if there’s something I can look at to see if it’s gone for good.
